Why Fleet Suspension Work Punishes Lifts More Than Passenger Service

A municipal fleet doing suspension and shock work loads its autolift garage differently than a car dealership doing oil changes. When a tech pulls a leaf spring off a three-quarter-ton service truck, the vehicle rebounds — sometimes several inches — because the sprung weight suddenly transfers. That rebound shocks the lift arms and, if the pad wasn’t seated right in the first place, can pop a pad off the pinch weld under load. That’s the moment a warranty claim becomes a workers’-comp case, and neither one is fun to file.

The lift itself is engineered for that load. Rotary, Challenger, and Forward all rate their two-posts at 10,000 lb dynamic. The problem isn’t the lift — it’s the pad-placement discipline. On a fleet autolift garage that swaps shocks and coil-overs weekly, we teach the crew to always seat the pad on the manufacturer’s specified lift point, always visually verify contact before rising past the first foot of travel, and always drop the vehicle onto the safety cams before starting suspension work. That last step is the one that separates a professional fleet operation from a hobby garage.

Pre-Lift Inspection — Two Minutes That Save the Warranty

Before every shift on a heavily-used autolift garage, the tech should walk the lift. Look at the arm-restraint gears — teeth clean, no chips, spring pressure firm when you push the arm sideways. Check the cables — no visible fraying, no rust bloom at the sheaves. Check the hydraulic hoses — no weeping at fittings, no bulges or cracks. Check the safety cams — engage the lift by hand at low travel and confirm you hear a clean tick. Look at the anchor bolts — no daylight between the post base and the concrete, torque marks intact from the last inspection.

Two minutes. That’s the whole inspection. The reason it matters for warranty is that Rotary and Challenger both require documented pre-shift inspection as a condition of warranty coverage on their commercial models. A fleet manager who can produce a signed daily inspection log has a warranty claim that goes through. A fleet manager who can’t gets denied even for legitimate defects. Simple, but it’s the difference between a paid claim and a fought claim.

Load Placement for Shock and Strut Replacement

Suspension work means the vehicle’s weight distribution changes mid-service. When a shock comes off, the corner it supported drops onto the pad. When the new shock goes on, the corner rises again. If the pad is off-center under the pinch weld, that dynamic loading walks the vehicle sideways on the pad. On an autolift garage doing forty shock changes a year, we’ve seen paint scuffed off pinch welds, we’ve seen pads worn asymmetrically, and once we saw a pad slip enough to gouge a rocker panel on a fleet pickup.

The fix is placement discipline. Every truck has factory lift points marked in the owner’s manual or on a body panel — usually a rectangular reinforcement rib inboard of the rocker. The pad centers on that rib, not on the flange or the seam. On a plow truck with corrosion damage on the pinch weld, we tell fleet techs to use a pad extension with a broader footprint instead of a narrow pad on a compromised weld. The Safety Cams and Locking Position — Not Optional

Every commercial autolift garage has a mechanical safety-cam system that holds the vehicle up even if hydraulic pressure fails. On suspension work, the tech should always lower the vehicle onto the cams before removing a shock or strut. That’s not a suggestion; it’s the manufacturer’s operating instruction, and it’s the position that keeps the load off the hydraulic cylinder and on the mechanical stop.

The reason fleet operations sometimes skip this step is speed. Dropping onto cams takes fifteen seconds and coming off takes another fifteen. Multiply by every shock replacement and it adds up. But skipping the step also voids the warranty on a hydraulic failure and creates a live overhead load if a hose bursts. We push fleet managers to make it a written shop rule, not a habit. The muscle memory sticks better with hands-on repetition than with a printed sheet.

What Voids an Autolift Garage Warranty — Real Examples

Warranty voids are almost never obscure. They’re the same four or five behaviors, and every fleet manager we’ve ever worked with has seen at least one. First: lifting a vehicle above the lift’s rated capacity. A 10,000 lb lift is 10,000 lb, and putting a fully-loaded plow truck (which can push 11,500 with the plow on) onto it is a void event whether or not anything breaks. Second: modifying the arms, pads, or hydraulic system with non-OEM parts. Third: skipping annual ALI-certified inspection. Fourth: operating past a known damage state — bent arm, cracked weld, missing safety-cam pin. Fifth: allowing untrained operators to use the lift.

Rotary and Challenger both include a warranty registration process at install. If the lift isn’t registered within thirty days of installation, warranty coverage is limited or waived. We handle that registration for every fleet client during install and give them a copy of the paperwork for their records. When a claim comes up, we file it on the fleet’s behalf, communicate with the manufacturer, and route the replacement parts. Fleet managers don’t have time to fight a claim process alone, and they shouldn’t have to.

The Warranty Claim Workflow Step by Step

When something breaks on a covered autolift garage, the claim workflow starts with a phone call to us. We ask three questions: what broke, what were you doing when it broke, and can you send a photo. From those three answers we know within a few minutes whether it’s a warranty case or a wear-and-tear case. Warranty cases go to the manufacturer with our support documentation. Wear-and-tear cases go to the parts department for same-day shipment.

On a warranty case, the manufacturer requires the failed part back for inspection before shipping the replacement. That means the fleet is down for a few days on major components — cylinders, powerpacks, arm assemblies. To minimize that downtime, we sometimes ship a loaner part or an out-of-warranty replacement at cost while the claim processes, and credit the fleet when the warranty resolves. That kind of accommodation isn’t standard from every distributor. It’s how we work with southwest Iowa municipal fleets who can’t afford a two-week downtime on a shop with a single lift.

Preventive Maintenance the Manufacturer Actually Requires

The manufacturer’s PM requirements for a commercial autolift garage are shorter than most fleet managers expect. Daily: pre-shift inspection. Monthly: check hydraulic fluid level, wipe the cylinder rod, spray a light lube on the safety-cam ladder. Annually: ALI-certified inspection performed by a third-party inspector, with documentation retained for warranty purposes. That’s the whole list on a Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger CL10. Nothing exotic, no proprietary fluid changes, no expensive certifications beyond ALI.

The ALI inspection is where most fleets fall behind. It costs a few hundred dollars, takes about an hour, and produces a stamped certificate that goes on the wall next to the lift. Without it, the warranty is effectively void even if you did every other step right.
