Restoration means metal work, paint prep, disassembly, long holds under load, and vehicles that sit on the lift for weeks between phases. The requirements collide: you want wheels-off access for chassis work, drive-on stability for panel work, and confidence in the arm restraints and safety-cam engagement for anything that stays elevated overnight. Where the autolift garage decision starts for a restoration shop

The decision tree for a restoration autolift garage starts with one question: how long will vehicles be elevated at a time? A general-service shop cycles vehicles up and down five to ten times a day, so lock engagement is the safety story. A restoration shop can leave a body-off frame elevated for two or three weeks while sheet metal work happens. That is a long-hold scenario where safety-cam engagement, arm restraints, and hydraulic drift-down matter more than cycle count. The lift you buy has to be built for the hold, not the cycle.

The second question is vehicle mix. A restoration shop working on 1960s American iron has different arm-reach requirements than one working on European sports cars. The pad geometry, arm swing range, and low-clearance pad heights change with the target vehicle. We ask restoration owners for a list of their five most common vehicles and their curb weights, then spec around the worst case. Restoration lifts should over-spec capacity by 30 percent minimum to account for engine and drivetrain removal, panel replacement, and staged parts loading during the build.

Arm restraints: the safety detail restoration shops care about most

Arm restraints on a 2-post autolift garage lift are the mechanical stop that keeps the arms from swinging out under load. On a Rotary or Challenger ALI Gold lift, the arm restraints engage automatically when the arms are pinned under a vehicle and prevent lateral swing. On import lifts, arm restraints are sometimes optional or absent — buyers do not notice until the first restoration disassembly, when someone bumps the arm with a floor jack and it swings free. That is a real risk on a vehicle that will be up for three weeks.

We ask restoration owners to physically test the arm restraints during the install-day walkthrough. With a demo vehicle at working height, our tech pins the arms under the frame contact points and confirms that the arms cannot be swung out by hand. On a properly built lift, they will not budge. On a lift with worn restraint teeth or an inadequate design, they slip. We do not leave the install until this test passes. If your shop has an older lift and you have never done this test, do it tomorrow — it takes 30 seconds and it tells you if the arms are trustworthy.

Safety-cam engagement and long-hold reliability

Safety-cam engagement is the sound and feel of a lift’s mechanical safety locks catching the lock ladder as the lift rises. On a well-built autolift garage lift, you hear the click at every ladder position, and you feel the arms settle into the cam when the lift is lowered slightly. That settle is what holds the vehicle for long restoration work — the hydraulic system is depressurized and the entire vehicle weight is resting on the mechanical cams. This is the safety architecture that makes long holds possible.

For restoration, we recommend cycling to the highest safety-cam position that gives you working access, then intentionally lowering to seat the cams before any work starts. Do this every time. If the cam engagement sound changes over months of use — a softer click, a delayed engagement — that is a wear signal and we should look at the ladder and pawl. On a Rotary or Challenger lift, replacement pawls and springs are shelf items and easy to swap. On import lifts, the parts pipeline is where restoration shops discover they own the wrong lift. Ask about it before you buy, not after.

2-post vs 4-post for the restoration autolift garage

Most restoration shops we work with in east-central Iowa run 2-post lifts, because wheels-off access is essential for chassis, suspension, and floor-pan work. A 2-post gives full access under the vehicle, arms out of the way, and the ability to remove wheels for brake, bearing, and rotor work without repositioning. For a shop doing full frame-off restorations, one or two 2-posts is the working configuration, and a 4-post lives at the other end of the shop for storage or long-term drive-on jobs.

The 4-post has a role in a restoration autolift garage, but it is secondary. Use it for storage of the finished vehicles waiting on final paint, for engine-in drivetrain work, and for wheel alignment after the restoration is done. Combine that with a rolling bridge jack and you get most of the wheels-off flexibility of a 2-post for the occasional job. What you should not do is try to restore on a 4-post as your primary lift — the arms-in geometry gets in the way of body work, and you will regret the choice within a month.

Budget tiers for the restoration autolift garage build

Budget for a restoration autolift garage runs from a starter tier through a full commercial-grade tier. The starter tier is a single ALI Gold 2-post from a US-supported brand, installed, wired, and warranty-covered. This is the minimum viable restoration lift, and it will handle a two-person shop doing one to two projects at a time. Expect to add tooling — creepers, jack stands, engine hoist, alignment tools — separately as the shop builds out.

The mid-tier build adds a 4-post for storage and rolling drive-on work, a rolling bridge jack, and an alignment-ready component if the shop plans to do post-restoration alignment in-house. This gives a two-lift shop that can keep multiple vehicles in different phases. The full commercial-grade tier adds a third lift, either a scissor for tire and brake work or a mid-rise for panel work at waist height, and starts investing in cabinet storage and pit access. Configuration and layout in an east-central Iowa shop

Layout of the autolift garage matters for shop flow. In a two-bay restoration shop, we place the primary 2-post lift in the bay closest to the door for easy vehicle drive-in, with the 4-post storage lift in the deeper bay. The 2-post needs 12-foot clear column-to-column width and 12-foot ceiling minimum for a low-rise model or 14-foot for a full-rise. The 4-post needs 20-foot runway length clear and 12-foot ceiling. Between them, leave a walking aisle of at least 5 feet for parts carts and tool boxes.

Power and air need to reach both lifts. We run 220V single-phase to both columns of the 2-post and to the pump end of the 4-post. Compressed air lines go to both lifts for the safety-lock releases and for pneumatic tooling at each bay. Overhead lighting should be direct fluorescent or LED with a light level of 100 foot-candles or better at the bay. Restoration work is detailed work, and shop light is the difference between finding a hairline crack in a floor pan and missing it until paint. That is the standard we build to on every install.

Where restoration shops cut corners and regret it

The most common autolift garage regret we hear from restoration shop owners is under-speccing the arm restraints or safety-cam engagement to save on the sticker price. A cheaper lift lands in the shop, gets loaded with a project, and two weeks later the owner hears an unfamiliar creak. That creak might be nothing, but on an unsupported lift with worn arm restraints, it might be the geometry starting to move. Now you have a partly-restored vehicle on a lift you no longer trust, and you cannot lower it safely without moving the project car.

The second regret is buying the wrong lift for the project mix. A shop that specializes in unibody work needs different arm geometry than a shop doing body-on-frame trucks, and getting that wrong makes every job harder.
