A mobile mechanic in Dubuque called us last summer about an autolift garage for a specific hybrid use case: seasonal storage of two customer classic cars over the winter, and a fixed indoor bay for the six months of the year when road service is slow and shop-based work picks up. He needed the lift to double as storage rack and as a working platform, in a converted stand-alone garage on his property. This is a case study of that install — the bay layout, the equipment choice, the workflow decisions, and what year one has looked like since we commissioned the lift last October in a converted pole building.

The Dubuque Setup: What the Autolift Garage Needed to Do

The mobile mechanic’s business model runs 60 percent mobile service in the warm months — pickup and delivery of light repair jobs at the customer’s location — and 40 percent shop-based service in the cold months when the mobile van is impractical in Dubuque winters. Two of his regular customers had also asked whether he would store their classic cars from November through April, because his shop was warmer, drier, and closer than the storage barns those owners had been using. The autolift garage he wanted had to do all three jobs: elevate a customer car for service, hold two cars stacked for winter storage, and do it in a converted 24-by-30-foot building.

The building was well suited to the job. It had a 12-foot ceiling, a 5-inch concrete slab from a previous shop-use pour, and a 100-amp single-phase panel with headroom for another circuit. The only questions were which lift model, where to position it in the bay, and how to handle the storage-versus-service switch. We walked through the constraints on a video call and quoted a Rotary SM14 four-post with an add-on bridge jack for wheels-free service duty.

Bay Layout Before the Lift Arrived

Bay layout was the first thing to nail down. The 24-by-30 building had a roll-up door on the 24-foot side. We positioned the four-post lift along the long axis of the building, with the drive-on ramps facing the roll-up door and the columns set 6 feet in from the door line. That left 8 feet of drive-in clearance for the tech to position a vehicle before loading. To the side of the lift we planned a 6-foot workbench-and-tool-cart alley on one side and a 4-foot walkway on the other, which allowed a tech to work at height while another vehicle was underneath for storage.

The layout also had to accommodate the mobile-service van, which parked inside the same building overnight during the warm months. We positioned the lift far enough back that the van could clear it when parked, which meant the mechanic could keep his mobile business running out of the same footprint. Every autolift garage we plan into a mixed-use building goes through the same layout exercise, because the value of the equipment doubles when the building keeps working for its other jobs.

Choosing a Four-Post for Storage Duty

The choice of a Rotary SM14 four-post over a two-post came down to storage duty. Four-post lifts are designed to hold a vehicle statically on mechanical safety locks for extended periods. Two-post lifts are not — the arms and pads are engineered for service duty, not four-month static loads. For a mobile mechanic who needed the lift to do both jobs, the four-post was the only real option. The 14,000-pound capacity gave headroom above the heaviest customer classic he expected to service, which was a mid-1970s Cadillac at around 5,200 pounds curb weight.

The bridge jack was the piece of equipment we insisted on including. Without it, the four-post is not a service lift — it is a storage device with wheels-locked runways. With it, the tech can lift the axles free for brake, suspension, and wheel work. That distinction is what turns a four-post autolift garage into a legitimate general-service tool. Skipping the bridge jack is a common budget cut we advise against, especially for a mechanic who bills service labor and needs the tool to earn its keep on both duties.

Workflow: Rolling In With a Trailer

The mobile mechanic often picks up customer cars on a trailer and rolls them into the shop. That workflow shaped the drive-on approach. A four-post autolift garage with ramps facing the roll-up door allowed him to back a trailer up to the door, lower the trailer ramps, and roll the car directly onto the lift runways in a single motion. The tech does not have to reposition the car on floor jacks or roll it around the shop. Total time from trailer to lifted position is under three minutes for a car that runs, or about eight minutes for one that has to be pushed on a dolly.

That workflow was one of the design decisions we walked through before install day. On a smaller building with less door clearance, the layout would have needed to be different. Because his building had a 12-foot-wide roll-up and a straight approach from the driveway, the trailer-to-lift path worked exactly as planned from day one. Small design decisions like this are what make the difference between a shop that runs smoothly and one that fights its own layout for years.

Off-Season Storage on the Autolift Garage

November through April, the four-post spends most of its time in storage duty. A customer 1968 Corvette sits on the lift, elevated to about seven feet, on the mechanical safety locks. The mechanic’s daily-driver truck parks underneath. In late January he added a second customer car — a 1972 Nova — parked on the ground next to the truck. The building holds three vehicles indoors during the coldest months, in a footprint that used to hold one, which is the pure value of the autolift garage in a storage role.

The static load has not caused any measurable settling on the hydraulic system after four months. The safety locks are mechanical, so the hydraulic system carries no load once the lift is racked. Cable tension has not shifted. Column plumb has not shifted. This is what four-post lifts are engineered to do, and after a full winter of storage duty the lift is behaving exactly as documented in the Rotary install manual. We stopped by in March for a quick inspection and everything looked correct.

What the Mobile Mechanic Learned in Year One

Year one lessons from the Dubuque install were mostly small. First, the LED shop lighting the mechanic installed was too dim at 12,000 lumens for the bay — he added another 8,000 lumens after month three. Second, the fluid catch cart he bought was too tall to slide under the runways when the lift was fully lowered, so he replaced it with a low-profile version. Third, the wall-mounted air-hose reel he installed at 8 feet was too low for comfortable use when the lift was elevated, so he moved it to 10 feet.

None of those lessons are lift-related. They are workflow lessons that a new shop always learns in the first year, regardless of the equipment. What matters is that the autolift garage itself performed exactly as expected across service duty, storage duty, and mixed-use — which is what happens when the lift is spec’d correctly to the actual work. If we had put a two-post in that same building, the storage duty would have failed and the mechanic would be shopping for a second lift right now.

Iowa-Specific Notes: Cold, Salt, and Concrete

Iowa builds add their own considerations. Cold cycling is one — a garage that drops to 20 degrees overnight and warms to 60 during the day puts thermal stress on hydraulic seals. Rotary and Challenger seal packages handle this without issue for the life of the equipment, but off-brand imports often do not. Road salt tracked into the shop on customer cars is another factor — salt on the slab under the lift eats concrete around the column bases over years. The Dubuque mechanic squeegees the slab weekly and treats it with a salt neutralizer twice a season, which is standard Iowa shop practice.

Concrete quality varies more in Iowa than most out-of-state buyers realize. Farm-shop pours from the 1980s and 90s are often thinner and lower PSI than modern commercial pours. Every autolift garage we install in a converted Iowa building starts with a slab test, because catching a thin slab before install is dramatically cheaper than finding it after. The Dubuque install passed the slab test at 5 inches and 3,500 PSI, which is why the four-post commissioning went smoothly.
