Start the Walkthrough at the Bay Door
Every safety-first layout review we do on automotive dealership construction or municipal fleet builds starts at the bay door, not the lift. We want to know the widest, tallest vehicle that will ever drive into that bay — plow attachments, light bars, roof-mounted equipment, all of it — and we want six inches of clearance beyond that on every side as a bare minimum. Southeast Iowa fleet garages often serve mixed fleets: pickups, dump trucks, squad cars, mowers. A layout sized only for the sedan in the fleet will fail the day the dump truck needs a lift.
From the door, we trace the actual path a vehicle takes to reach its lift position. We’d rather see a longer, straighter approach with generous turning radius than a compact layout that looks efficient on paper but forces risky maneuvering every single day. Lift Placement and Column Clearance
Once a vehicle is positioned, the next safety question is what’s around the lift itself. We look for a minimum of three feet of clear walking space around each lift’s footprint so a technician can walk the full perimeter during inspection without squeezing past a column or a neighboring vehicle. For four-post and in-ground lift configurations common in fleet maintenance, we also check overhead clearance against ceiling height, ductwork, and any overhead crane rails that might already be planned for the bay.
In general daily maintenance work — oil changes, brake jobs, tire swaps, undercarriage inspection — technicians are in and out from under the vehicle constantly. That means the space between adjacent lifts needs to account for someone rolling a creeper or a parts cart out from underneath without backing into the next bay’s activity. Airline, Power, and Trip Hazards
