On a properly maintained lift, you hear a distinct click every couple of inches as the cams engage. Once the lift is up, you lower it a few inches until you hear all four cams settle onto their pawls, and that is your working position. For heavier trucks — three-quarter-ton and up — step to 12,000 pounds so you have margin. If you plan on doing serious front-end work at home, the 2-post is almost always the answer over a 4-post because you need the wheels hanging free. A 4-post plus rolling jacks works too but is fussier for repeated suspension work day after day.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric 2-Post Arms
A symmetric 2-post lifts the vehicle at its midpoint — arms of equal length front and rear, columns in front of and behind the vehicle’s center. An asymmetric 2-post rotates the vehicle back on its columns so the door opens without hitting the post, with longer arms in front and shorter in back. For daily-driver passenger cars, asymmetric is what most home garages want because you can open the door once the vehicle is up. For heavy trucks with long wheelbases, symmetric can be a better fit. Some lifts offer versymmetric arms that swing between both modes. Ames Installation and Slab Requirements
Our Ames install crew delivers throughout central Iowa on a rolling schedule and handles the entire process from crane offload to final calibration. For a 2-post, slab minimum is four inches of good concrete at 3,000 PSI. Anchors are wedge-style, driven with a rotary hammer, torqued to spec. Total anchor count runs six per column. If your slab has visible cracks through the anchor field, we flag it and either patch or recommend a pad pour before install. Install day itself is a half-day event: pallet drop, column set, hydraulic and pneumatic hookup, safety-lock and restraint verification, and a walkthrough with the owner. We do not leave until the lift raises and lowers safely with the safety cams engaged.
