Alignment work in a home shop is one of the most misunderstood use cases for an automotive lift for home garage installations. Most first-time buyers don’t realize that a two-post lift will not do alignment properly, and most four-post buyers don’t realize how much specific gear you need on top of the lift to make alignment work possible. A Cedar Rapids independent shop owner recently walked us through his side-work plans: he wanted to run alignment jobs out of his home shop on nights and weekends, and he needed to know whether to spec a four-post with alignment accessories or a scissor alignment lift. This is the side-by-side comparison we ran with him and the layout math that drove the final call.

Alignment Fundamentals: What the Lift Has to Do
Alignment measurement requires the vehicle sitting on a flat, level surface with the wheels free to pivot. That is why every professional alignment rack in the world uses either a four-post lift with front turntables and rear slip plates, or a purpose-built scissor alignment lift with the same features built in. You cannot align a car on a two-post because the wheels hang free. The vehicle’s own suspension has to be compressed to its ride height for alignment numbers to mean anything. Every alignment tech reading this already knows that, but a first-time home-shop buyer often does not.
An automotive lift for home garage that will actually do alignment work needs three things beyond the lift itself: front wheel turntables (typically 6,000-pound rated for pass-car work), rear slip plates on both runways, and a level slab tolerance of about one degree over the working area. Miss any of those and you can raise the vehicle just fine but you cannot measure alignment accurately. That is the qualifying question we always ask before quoting an alignment-capable lift. If the customer only ever wants to change tires and pads, they don’t need any of it, and we say so.
Four-Post With Alignment Accessories: The Traditional Path
The most common alignment setup for a small home shop is a 10,000 to 12,000-pound four-post lift with a factory alignment package: recessed front turntable pockets in the runway, factory-supplied 6K turntables, and factory-supplied slip plates. Rotary and Challenger both offer these packages, and they represent the shortest path from a general-purpose automotive lift for home garage to a real alignment-capable bay. Total cost premium over a standard four-post is a couple thousand dollars for the alignment package.
The advantage of this path is versatility. You can use the four-post as a general-purpose service lift every day and only put down turntables when you’re doing an alignment. That works well if alignment is a small share of your total work: say, one alignment for every ten oil changes. The disadvantage is that alignment-capable four-posts need longer runways (typically 200-inch runway length instead of 172-inch) to fit turntables ahead of the front wheels, and they need more precise runway leveling. Scissor Alignment Lift: The Space-Efficient Path
The alternative is a purpose-built scissor alignment lift: a mid-rise or full-rise scissor with turntables and slip plates factory-integrated into the deck. Challenger’s SX14 and similar models are examples. The advantage is footprint. A scissor alignment lift takes about half the floor space of a four-post because there are no columns. If your Cedar Rapids garage is tight, this can be the difference between having a lift and not having a lift.
The disadvantage is versatility. A scissor alignment lift is optimized for alignment and struggles with everything a four-post does well. You can’t easily store a car on it, you can’t run a rolling jack bridge because there isn’t one, and the deck geometry works against you for suspension work. For an automotive lift for home garage where alignment is 30 percent or more of your work, the scissor is the right answer. For a shop where alignment is 5 percent and everything else is fluid service and brake work, the four-post with an alignment kit wins. This is genuinely a workflow-share question, not a technology question.
Cedar Rapids Garage Layout Considerations
Cedar Rapids has a mix of older 22-foot-deep detached garages and newer 30-foot-plus pole shops. If your bay is only 22 feet deep, you cannot fit a 200-inch alignment-capable four-post lift with room to walk around the front for turntable access; you’d need 26 feet minimum bay depth. For that constrained bay a scissor alignment lift makes more sense because you can pull the car in, do the alignment, and pull out without the extra clearance for turntables ahead of the vehicle.
For a 30-foot-plus pole shop the four-post is the layout winner. You have room ahead of the lift for a workbench and toolboxes without interfering with alignment turntable access. You have room behind for the alignment head equipment. And you can position the lift centered in the bay so both sides have three feet of walkaround. Turntables and Slip Plates: What You Actually Need
A proper alignment setup needs 6,000-pound-rated turntables under the front wheels (they support the vehicle weight and allow the wheels to pivot for caster and toe measurement), and slip plates under the rear wheels (allowing the rear axle to slide sideways so tolerance stackup doesn’t fight your measurement). Both come standard on factory alignment packages from Rotary and Challenger. If you’re piecing together an automotive lift for home garage alignment setup from separate components, plan on spending in the low thousands for turntables and slip plates alone.
Aftermarket turntables and slip plates work fine if you’re on a budget, but they don’t recess into the runway and they add trip hazards. For a home shop where the same lift also gets used for oil changes and brake work, the recessed factory pockets are worth the extra cost. They let you drop the turntables into the runway when you’re not doing alignment and leave a flat working surface for everything else. It is a small quality-of-life detail that pays back over five thousand cycles of use.
Alignment Head and Software: The Other Half of the Bill
The lift is only half the story. To actually run alignment jobs you need a wheel-camera or CCD alignment head system and the software subscription to go with it. Hunter Engineering is the industry standard here (that is what every dealership in Iowa runs) and even a used Hunter head with current software subscription costs multiples of what the lift costs. For a Cedar Rapids home shop where alignment is a side revenue stream, plan on the alignment head being the biggest single line item on the total buildout.
That said, a used Hunter head off the auction market with an updated software subscription is entirely realistic for a home-shop buildout and turns a general-purpose automotive lift for home garage into a real alignment-capable bay. You can pay for the whole system within a year if you have steady side work. This is the classic small-shop math: the lift is a twenty-year asset, and the alignment head is a five-to-ten-year asset that needs software renewals to stay useful. Plan both together up front.
