A first-time buyer in Marion, Iowa emailed us last spring saying he was putting up a new pole building shop and wanted an automotive lift for home garage transmission work on a project truck plus routine service on the family cars. He knew he wanted a lift. He did not know whether he wanted 2-post or 4-post, symmetric or asymmetric, 8,000 or 10,000 pounds, overhead or baseplate. His email led to a two-hour phone call and a jobsite measurement, and eventually a lift that has now run for two years without a service call. This guide is what we told him, rearranged into the order you should actually think about the decision. It applies to anyone building or retrofitting a shop for personal use.

Start with the work, not the brand
Before you pick a brand or a capacity, tell us what you are actually going to do on the lift. If your honest answer is oil changes and brake pads on family cars, you do not need a 10,000 lb 2-post with 220-volt power. A 6,000 lb 4-post with drive-on ramps will do that work all day and store a second vehicle underneath when you are done. If the honest answer includes transmission drops, engine pulls, and clutch jobs, you want a 2-post because you need the underside completely open. That was the Marion buyer. He mentioned transmission work in the second email and it pointed us straight at 2-post from that moment on.
Weight rating is easier. Look up the curb weight of the heaviest vehicle you plan to lift, add 500 to 1,000 pounds for future purchases and fluid, and round up to the next standard capacity. Passenger cars land at 8,000 lb. Half-ton pickups land at 10,000. Three-quarter and one-ton trucks push into 12,000 lb territory. An automotive lift for home garage duty rarely needs more than 10,000 lb unless you own a diesel dually or a rescue vehicle.
Measure the building before you shop
Three numbers set your options: ceiling height under the lowest obstruction, bay width between walls or columns, and bay depth from door to back wall. The Marion buyer had 12-foot walls and a clean 30 by 40 pole barn interior with no trusses hanging low. That gave him almost any lift on the market. Not every buyer is that lucky. If your ceiling is 10 feet, you are limited to mid-rise scissor lifts or short-column 4-posts. If your width is under 12 feet clear between obstructions, 2-post arm swing gets tight. If your depth is under 22 feet, a full-size pickup will not fit on a 4-post runway with tailgate down.
We measure twice before we quote. We lay tape on the floor and mark column positions with chalk. We check garage door height in the open position because a rolled-up sectional door often eats 12 to 15 inches of ceiling near the front of the bay. Every automotive lift for home garage install we schedule includes a measure-in-person visit if the buyer is within two hours of Ames. It is the cheapest insurance we sell.
Overhead vs baseplate in one sentence
If your ceiling is 12 feet or taller and you never plan to lift a lowered car, buy overhead. If your ceiling is under 12 feet or you own a lowered car, buy baseplate. That is 90 percent of the decision. The overhead beam sits above the vehicle and connects the two columns, adding roughly 12 to 15 inches to total lift height. The baseplate sits on the floor between the columns, so the vehicle drives over a low ramp on the way in.
Both configurations lift the same vehicle to the same height. Both use the same mechanical safety locks that click every 3 inches of rise, so you can park at a comfortable working height instead of running the lift all the way up. That click-adjustment feature surprises first-time buyers who assume it is all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up. It is not. You set the working height once per vehicle and move on.
Symmetric, asymmetric, and why asymmetric matters
A symmetric 2-post lift positions its columns directly across from each other, and the arms are equal length front and rear. That works for a symmetric vehicle like a work truck. An asymmetric lift rotates the columns 30 degrees, and the front arms are shorter than the rear. That geometry pushes the vehicle backward on the lift, so the driver door clears the column when you open it. Almost every modern passenger car needs asymmetric geometry to open the door at working height.
Some lifts are truly versymmetric, meaning they can act as either symmetric or asymmetric with arm-position swaps. If you plan to lift both a work truck and a passenger car on the same automotive lift for home garage duty, versymmetric is the safest single purchase. It costs slightly more up front, but it does not lock you into one vehicle type. Rotary and Challenger both make excellent versymmetric 2-post lifts we stock in Iowa.
Transmission work needs 2-post, not 4-post
Our Marion buyer wanted to do transmission work on a 1970s project truck. That single sentence eliminated 4-post from the discussion because a 4-post lift blocks the underside of the vehicle with drive-on runways. You cannot pull a transmission out through the runway. A 2-post lift picks the vehicle up by its frame or pinch welds, leaving the entire underside open for a transmission jack to roll under.
If you do not do drivetrain work and you mostly want to store a second vehicle under the first one, 4-post makes more sense. It is a parking device with maintenance capability. A 2-post is a maintenance device with limited storage capability. The buyer’s actual use case decides which to spend money on. Our automotive lift for home garage sales split roughly 60 percent 2-post and 40 percent 4-post because most buyers doing enough garage work to justify the purchase are doing more than tire rotations.
Concrete, power, and what the installer needs
All modern 2-post lifts require a minimum 4-inch, 3,000 psi slab. If your slab is thinner or unknown thickness, we can core-sample before install. If it is not adequate, we can cut out a 4-foot square under each column, pour footings, and set the lift on those. That is a common Iowa retrofit for older shops. New pole barns almost always have adequate slab if the builder was told a lift was coming.
Electrical is straightforward. Most 2-post lifts run on 220-volt single-phase power, drawing about 20 amps at startup. You need a dedicated 30-amp circuit and a location plan for the power unit, usually on the driver-side column. 4-post lifts are similar. Our installer will land the lift, torque anchors, fill and bleed hydraulics, cycle-test three times, and hand you the ALI operator’s manual before we leave. From arrival to first lift on a clean install runs 4 to 6 hours.
Delivery, install, and what to expect on the day
We deliver our own lifts within a two-hour radius of Ames using our flatbed. Outside that radius we ship freight and coordinate a local install crew, or we drive out for a fee. The Marion install was a same-day delivery and set. We arrived at 8 a.m., laid columns, torqued anchors by 10 a.m., ran cables and hydraulics by noon, tested by 1 p.m., and drove home. He was doing brakes on it the next weekend.
