Slab Thickness and Why 4 Inches Is the Line

In our experience with pole-barn floors from the 1970s and 1980s, three-inch slabs are common and they can still take a lift if we cut and pour a pad under each column footprint. That is a real project but it is not a project killer.

We drilled anchors, torqued them to the top of the manufacturer’s spec range, and did not have to think about the slab again. It is a small upcharge at pour time and it opens every future lift option including mobile column sets or heavier 2-posts down the road.
Ceiling Height and Rise Limits

On most 2-post lifts, the lift can raise a vehicle until the top of the vehicle plus about 6 inches of safety clearance hits the ceiling. So a 6-foot pickup on an 11-foot ceiling gives you roughly 5 feet of vertical space to work under the vehicle. That is fine for most people. Six feet of vertical space, on a 12-foot ceiling, is comfortable for anyone under six feet tall. Seven feet, on a 13-foot ceiling, is what a professional shop feels like.
The Marion homeowner had 12 feet under the truss chord, opening to 14 at the peak. That gave him 7 feet of clear work height under his pickup at full rise, which is more than he needs. It also meant he could someday move up to a taller SUV or a lifted pickup without ceiling constraints. There is not a lift for a 7-foot ceiling. Below 9 feet, honestly, plan a taller building first.

For any suspension or brake work, the 2-post is the safer default.
