We got a call last fall from a one-bay European specialty shop in southeast Iowa that does nothing but oil changes and fluid service on BMWs and Audis. The owner had already bought an automotive lift for home garage use online, had it sitting in a crate, and assumed his existing 110-volt outlet would run it once his electrician “jumped it up a little.” That is the single most common mistake we see, and it is why we’re writing this: the electrical side of a lift install is not a detail you figure out after delivery. It is the first phone call you should make, before you spend a dime.

Myth 1: “It’s a home garage lift, so it must run on regular household power”

This is the myth that costs people the most money after the fact. Most automotive lift for home garage packages we sell ship with a power unit that wants 220-240 volt single phase, not the 110-120 volt circuit that runs your fridge and garage door opener. A handful of lighter-duty models can be ordered with a 110V motor, but that is a specific configuration you request at order time, not a default. If nobody asks, you’ll get the standard 220V unit, and it will sit in the crate while you scramble for an electrician.

The fix is simple: before you ever place an order, walk your panel and tell us what’s already available in the bay. We’ll match the lift’s power unit to what you actually have, or tell you honestly what the electrician needs to add. A European specialty shop doing oil changes and fluid service doesn’t need a commercial three-phase setup, but it does need a dedicated 220V circuit sized correctly for the motor, and that’s worth confirming twice.

Myth 2: Any outlet near the lift location will work

We hear this constantly from home garage owners: “there’s already an outlet on that wall, can’t we just use it?” Almost never. Lift power units draw enough current on startup that they need their own dedicated circuit and breaker, sized to the motor’s amperage, not shared with a compressor, a shop light circuit, or anything else pulling power in the bay. Running a lift off a shared circuit is how you trip breakers mid-lift with a car in the air, which is not where you want a surprise.

We’ve seen this play out with a customer near Marshalltown who assumed his existing welder outlet would double as lift power. It technically had the right voltage, but the breaker was undersized for both loads running together. His electrician had to add a new dedicated line before the lift could be commissioned. Tell us your panel’s available amperage and we’ll spec the circuit requirement so your electrician has a clean, correct number to work from the first time, not a guess.

Myth 3: Single phase and three phase are interchangeable with an adapter

They are not, and this myth causes real damage. Most home garages and small independent bays only have single-phase service available from the utility, and the vast majority of home garage lift power units are built for single phase specifically because of that. Three-phase power units exist for larger commercial installs, but converting a motor from one to the other isn’t a matter of a cheap adapter box — it’s a different motor, different wiring, and in some cases a phase converter that adds real cost. If a shop tries to sell you a lift spec’d for three-phase into a single-phase home garage “because it’ll work with an adapter,” walk away from that quote.

When we quote a lift, we confirm what your building actually has before the order goes in, not after. That single question — single phase or three phase — determines which power unit variant ships, and getting it backwards means a lift that either won’t run or runs on borrowed, unreliable power.

Myth 4: The electrician can figure it out from the manual alone

Lift manuals give torque specs and clearance dimensions well, but the electrical section is often generic across a whole model line, and it doesn’t account for your specific run length from panel to bay, your local code requirements, or whether your garage has room on the existing panel at all. We’ve had good electricians call us directly mid-job because the manual listed a motor spec but not a recommended breaker size or wire gauge for their run distance.

That one call usually saves a return trip and an extra invoice for a fix that should have been part of the original job.

Myth 3.5: You can wire it yourself and test it before we ever see it

We get this one from confident DIYers with a European car and a home bay dialed in for oil changes and fluid service. Wiring the disconnect and running a circuit is electrician work, full stop, and most municipalities in southeast Iowa require a permit and inspection for a new 220V circuit anyway. We’ve had a customer email us photos after the electrician finished wiring the lift, and on first use the arm swing caught on a support post — a clearance issue that had nothing to do with the wiring itself but showed up right at first startup. That’s exactly the kind of thing we catch on a pre-install walkthrough, before the first vehicle ever goes up.

Let the licensed electrician handle the circuit, let us confirm the lift’s placement and clearances beforehand, and test the whole system together before you trust it with a customer’s BMW on the ramps.

Myth 5: Ceiling height and floor thickness don’t matter as much as the wiring

Electrical is the part people forget, but it’s not the only prerequisite. We’ve had customers measure their garage at 11 feet high, 11 feet wide, and assume that’s plenty, only to find the two-post they wanted needs more overhead clearance than that once you add the vehicle height and lift travel. Concrete thickness matters too — most two-post lifts want a slab in the 4 to 6 inch range, poured and cured, not just any old garage floor.

Before you finalize your automotive lift for home garage purchase, we ask for ceiling height, floor thickness and age, and bay width, in the same conversation where we’re asking about your electrical panel. It’s a five-minute checklist that prevents a lift showing up to a bay that can’t actually fit it.
