The shop had been doing brake service and rotor swaps on trailers and small RVs using ramps and a floor jack, and it was slow and hard on the crew’s backs. Axles on travel trailers and toy haulers sit low, and getting even weight distribution on ramps while someone works a caliper is not something you want to do every day. The owner wanted something that could lift a loaded axle evenly, hold it safely at a working height, and give someone room to actually see what they’re doing instead of laying on a creeper.

We walked through what an automotive lift for home garage or small-shop use needs to do differently than a passenger-car lift. Trailer and RV work means wider stances, sometimes uneven weight side to side, and tires that are taller than a typical sedan’s. Concrete Slab Thickness and Rebar: The Part Nobody Thinks About First

As a rule of thumb we tell customers we want to see at least 4 inches of concrete under the anchor points, and we want to know whether there’s rebar or wire mesh in it and roughly how old the pour is. A slab poured for a hobby garage twenty years ago is not always poured the same as one meant to hold a loaded lift and a trailer axle swinging above it.

For this shop, the existing slab was closer to 3.5 inches in one corner of the bay where an old addition met the original floor, and that’s exactly the kind of inconsistency that shows up on a walk-through and not on a phone call. We ended up recommending a small pour-back in that section before anchoring the posts, which added a little time to the schedule but saved everyone from a lift that rocks or anchors that pull out under load six months in. Choosing Between a Two-Post and a Four-Post for This Kind of Work

Driving the trailer or RV straight onto the platform meant no lifting points to hunt for, no risk of picking up an axle wrong, and a flat deck to roll a creeper or set up rolling jacks underneath for brake work at the wheel ends. It also meant less operator judgment involved — with varying trailer frame designs coming through the bay, a flat deck removes a lot of the guesswork.

We also talked about ceiling height, since that’s the other number that trips people up as often as the slab does. A four-post with a loaded trailer on top needs real clearance, and in a pole-barn style building that’s usually fine, but in a converted attached garage it can be tight. This shop had good height to work with, so a four-post home garage automotive lift setup was the right call. In a lower building we’d likely have steered them toward a two-post with trailer-specific adapters instead.

Install Day: Freight, Forklifts, and What Actually Slows Things Down

Once the slab was sorted, the logistics were the next thing to nail down. Lifts this size don’t show up in a box you carry in — they arrive on a freight truck, usually banded to a pallet, and someone needs a way to get them off the truck. We always ask up front whether there’s a forklift on site or a loading dock, because if there isn’t, that changes how the delivery gets scheduled and sometimes what it costs. This shop had a forklift they used for parts anyway, so unloading wasn’t the bottleneck it is for some home-garage customers who don’t have equipment on site at all.

From there, install day was fairly straightforward: layout the anchor pattern, drill and set anchors into the repaired slab section, assemble the posts and crossmembers, run hydraulics, and test cycle empty before ever loading a trailer onto it. We’re careful about protecting the floor around a home garage automotive lift install too — no chains dragging, pads under anything that touches finished concrete — because a scuffed or cracked slab next to a brand-new lift is not the impression anyone wants on day one.

The First Real Brake Job on the New Lift

Maintenance Habits That Keep a Home Garage Lift Running for Years

Once a lift is in and earning its keep, the maintenance side is mostly about consistency. We tell every home garage or small-shop customer the same short list: check hydraulic fluid level and look for weeping at the cylinder seals periodically, keep cables or chains lubricated and watch for fraying, and re-torque anchor bolts on a schedule, especially in the first year while everything is settling into the concrete. Skipping that re-torque step is one of the more common reasons we get called back out for a lift that’s developed a wobble or an uneven rise.

For a shop doing brake service regularly, we also recommend keeping an eye on the arm restraints and adapter pads, since brake work means more time with wheels off and adapters bearing weight directly on the frame or axle. Worn pads are a cheap fix if you catch them early and an annoying one if you don’t. None of this is complicated, but it’s the kind of unglamorous upkeep that separates a lift that’s still solid in year five from one that’s already showing problems.

Get the concrete checked for thickness and condition, and be honest about ceiling height and whether you’ve got a way to unload freight.
