Symmetric two-post lifts have all four arms the same length. When you drive the vehicle in and set the pads, the vehicle sits exactly centered between the columns front-to-back. Both driver-side arms are equal length, both passenger-side arms are equal length, and the center of gravity of the vehicle lands roughly in the middle of the column spread. The door of the vehicle lines up with the column pad, which means you cannot open the door fully without swinging into the column.
Asymmetric two-post lifts have shorter front arms and longer rear arms. The vehicle sits rotated rearward about 30 percent in the column spread, which moves the door line forward of the column and lets you open the doors normally with the vehicle in the air. The column is also often rotated inward at a slight angle in true asymmetric configurations, which further clears the door swing. The trade-off is that the front of the vehicle sticks out farther forward of the columns than on a symmetric lift.
When asymmetric makes sense for a home garage

Differential fluid service and arm placement
Differential fluid service is a great example of a job that puts arm placement in sharp focus. Rear diff work on a full-size truck means you are underneath the back of the vehicle, working on the diff cover with the pinion pointing forward. Your body is under the rear wheels and your hands are on the diff cover about 2 feet forward of the rear bumper. You need clear working space that far into the vehicle without arms in the way. Symmetric puts the rear arms directly under the rocker panel behind the rear wheels, which sometimes lands right where you want to stand.
Asymmetric shifts the rear arms slightly rearward relative to the vehicle, which usually opens up the working zone under the rear differential. Front differential work on a four-wheel-drive truck is the opposite: you are under the transfer case and front diff, which sits between the front wheels. Both configurations work fine for front diff, but asymmetric gives cleaner rear diff access. The door-opening reach problem
