Dropping and servicing a differential is a different job than swapping brake pads. You need the vehicle high, you need both hands free, and you often need to pull a driveshaft or drop a cradle without fighting for space. A lot of guys buy an automotive lift for home garage use thinking mostly about oil changes and tire rotations, then get frustrated the first time they’re wrestling a heavy diff assembly at chest height with no room to maneuver a transmission jack underneath. That’s the moment overhead versus baseplate stops being a theoretical question.

On a farm shop where you’re servicing everything from a half-ton pickup to a grain truck axle, the extra lift height and unobstructed floor space matter more than they do in a typical suburban garage. We tell people to think about the heaviest, tallest thing they’ll ever put on the lift, not the average job. Overhead Configuration: What You Gain

An overhead two-post lift runs its crossbar and cable routing up high, out of the way, which gives you completely clear floor space under and around the vehicle. For diff service specifically, this matters because you can roll a transmission jack, a floor jack, or even a second worker’s cart underneath without ducking under a lower crossmember. There’s nothing between you and the vehicle at head height on either side.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. Overhead lifts need real clearance above the vehicle at full rise, plus the crossbar itself, plus any additional room for the cable routing. In an older farm shop with lower trusses or a shop that doubles as equipment storage, that can be a dealbreaker. We’ve measured plenty of buildings around Marion where the owner wanted overhead and the rafters simply wouldn’t allow it. Before you fall in love with the overhead layout, get an actual tape measure on your ceiling height from the finished floor, not an estimate, because a few inches decides this for you.

Baseplate Configuration: What You Gain

A baseplate two-post lift ties its structural support across the floor at the base of each post instead of overhead. That means it works in shops with lower ceilings where an overhead unit simply won’t fit, and it’s often the more practical automotive lift for home garage buildings that were built for storage rather than a dedicated shop bay.

The tradeoff is that the baseplate itself sits on the floor between the posts, which can be a minor obstacle when you’re rolling equipment underneath for diff work. It’s rarely a dealbreaker, but if you’re constantly walking heavy jacks and stands in and out from vehicle center, it’s worth test-fitting with tape on your own floor before you commit. For diff service, that convenience has to be weighed against arm-style flexibility, because sometimes you need the arms positioned precisely to clear a diff housing or leave room to drop a driveshaft cleanly.

We generally steer diff-focused shops toward adjustable arm two-post lifts rather than pure drive-on setups, simply because you need the freedom to position lift points around the vehicle’s specific undercarriage layout, especially on trucks that see snowplows, toolboxes, or aftermarket skid plates. Getting the Install Scheduled Right
