We got a call a few weeks back from a guy building out a garage bay near the Iowa-Missouri border who does European-marque brake work on the side — mostly BMW and Audi rotor swaps for friends and a small local customer base. He’d bought a used two-post secondhand and wanted to know if he really needed to bother with the arm restraints since “it’s just brakes, the car’s not going anywhere.” That’s the exact kind of thinking that gets people hurt, and it’s why we’re writing this. Myth #1: “Arm restraints are just for keeping the arms out of the way while driving on”

This is the single biggest misunderstanding we run into when we quote an automotive lift for home garage use. Arm restraints do help you position the arms before you drive a car onto the lift, sure, but that’s not their real job. Their real job is preventing the arms from swinging out from under the vehicle once it’s in the air. On a two-post lift doing brake and rotor work, you’ve got the wheels off, the car sitting on nothing but those four arm pads, and if an arm isn’t locked into a restraint bracket, vibration from an impact gun or even someone bumping the car can walk that arm loose.

We’ve been out to shops on both sides of the Iowa-Missouri line where a tech skipped the restraint step because they were in a hurry between rotor jobs, and it’s always the same explanation afterward: “it’s never been a problem before.” Until it is. On European cars especially, with lower pinch points and different jack pad locations than domestic trucks, techs sometimes reposition arms mid-job to get better clearance on calipers, and that’s exactly when a restraint left disengaged turns into a real problem. Myth #2: “The safety cams engage automatically no matter what”

Safety cams (or safety locks, depending on the brand) are designed to engage automatically as the carriage passes each notch on the way up — that part’s true. What’s not true is the assumption that they’ll catch you no matter how the lift is operated. If a lift is raised too fast, or if a tech rides the release lever instead of fully lowering onto a lock before starting work, the cams may not be seated in the notch the way they’re supposed to be. We see this most on older units that have been resold or moved — exactly the kind of unit we get calls about from guys setting up a home garage brake bay on a budget, buying used equipment sight-unseen.

A used two-post or four-post is a fine way to get into an automotive lift for home garage work, but the safety cam mechanism is one of the first things we check on any used unit before it goes back into service. Myth #3: “If it’s a home garage, safety rules are different”

We hear this a lot from hobbyists and side-business techs alike — the idea that because it’s not a commercial shop with insurance inspectors walking through, the safety cam and arm restraint rules are somehow relaxed. They’re not. Gravity doesn’t know the difference between a dealership bay and a pole barn near the Iowa-Missouri border. If you’re pulling wheels off a BMW to do a rotor and pad job, that car needs to be locked on every safety cam the same way it would in a commercial European specialty shop.

If anything, home garage setups deserve more attention to this stuff, not less, because there’s often no second tech around to notice if something looks off. Every time we install an automotive lift for home garage service, we run through the same checklist: arm restraint brackets present and functional on all four arms, safety cam engagement audible and visible at multiple heights, release cable tension correct, and pad height even so the car sits level once locked.
