An automotive lift for home garage use has to do more than just get a car in the air — especially if you’re working underneath on exhaust systems, driveshafts, and EV battery packs where full-length access matters more than raw lift capacity. We hear this constantly from shop owners in east-central Iowa building out a side garage or a small EV specialty bay: they buy based on weight rating alone and end up with a lift that fights them every time they need to drop a driveshaft or slide a battery tray. As an Iowa-based installer and parts supplier, we’ve walked enough customers back from a bad model choice to know the mistakes are predictable — and avoidable if you know what to compare before you order.

Myth: Any Two-Post Lift Gives You Full Underbody Access

This is the biggest misconception we run into. A standard two-post lift for home garage use puts the arms and columns right where you need to work on a lot of exhaust and driveline jobs — near the mid-frame and rear axle. If you’re constantly dropping exhaust sections, pulling driveshafts, or servicing EV motor mounts, the arm placement on some two-post models can actually get in your way more than a four-post or drive-on lift would. We’ve had EV specialty shop owners tell us they assumed a two-post would be the most versatile choice simply because it’s the most common configuration sold, without checking arm reach or asymmetric column offset against the actual work they do.

The fix isn’t necessarily switching lift types — it’s checking the spec sheet for arm length, reach, and column setback before you buy. Some two-post models, like a Rotary SPO12, offer longer front arms specifically so techs can access exhaust and suspension without repositioning the vehicle twice. If your work is heavy on driveline and undercarriage access, that’s the number to compare, not just the weight rating.

Myth: A 9,000 lb Rating Is Always “Enough” for a Home Garage

Weight capacity gets all the attention in home garage lift shopping, but for exhaust and driveline work the more important number is often clearance and reach, not tonnage. A lot of home and small-shop lifts are rated 9,000 to 10,000 lbs, which covers the vast majority of daily drivers and light trucks. The mistake is assuming that number tells you anything about how well you’ll access the underside of the vehicle once it’s in the air.

We tell customers to look past the capacity line and check the lift’s overall height, arm swing radius, and ceiling clearance requirement side by side. A BendPak or Atlas model rated similarly to a competitor can have very different post height and header clearance, which matters a lot if your garage has a lower ceiling or you’re running an EV bay with overhead charging equipment. Two lifts with identical weight ratings can be completely different tools for driveline work depending on these secondary specs.

Myth: Four-Post Lifts Are Only for Storage, Not Real Work

We hear this one from customers who assume a four-post drive-on lift is basically a parking platform and a two-post is the “real” service lift. For general driveline and exhaust access, that’s backward more often than not. A four-post gives you a flat, stable platform to work under the full length of the vehicle without arms in the way, which is genuinely useful for dropping a full exhaust system or working across a driveshaft from multiple angles.

The tradeoff is that some four-post lifts limit access to certain drop points unless you add a rolling bridge jack or sliding jack tray, so if you need to pull wheels off the ground for driveline work, you have to spec that accessory in from the start. We walk east-central Iowa customers through this exact comparison — a four-post with a sliding jack setup versus a two-post with better arm reach — because the right answer genuinely depends on whether wheels-off access is a daily need or an occasional one.

Myth: All Model Numbers in the Same Family Perform the Same

Lift lines often get shopped by name rather than by number, and that causes real confusion. A Challenger or Rotary lift family can include several models with meaningfully different rise heights, arm configurations, and drive-through capability, even though they share a marketing name. We’ve fielded calls from customers who ordered based on a general model family name and got a version that didn’t match the low-clearance or drive-through spec they actually needed for their bay.

Before ordering an automotive lift for home garage use, get the exact model number and pull the spec sheet yourself, or have us do it. Compare rise height, minimum clearance under the crossbar, and arm reach against your actual vehicles and work style. This is especially important for EV and driveline work where battery packs and skid plates sit lower and require careful positioning under the frame rails.

Myth: Electrical Hookup Is a Minor Afterthought

We get this question all the time, almost word for word: do I need a 20 amp or 30 amp circuit? For most home garage lift installations we recommend a 30 amp breaker paired with a twist-lock receptacle, not the 20 amp setup some customers assume will be sufficient because it’s what’s already run to the garage. Undersizing the electrical is one of the most common installation mistakes we see, and it causes nuisance tripping right when you’re mid-job on an exhaust drop or driveline pull.

Get this settled with your electrician before the lift arrives, not after. It’s a small detail compared to picking the right model, but it’s the difference between a lift that runs smoothly for years and one that becomes a constant annoyance. We’d rather answer this question up front than have a customer troubleshoot a tripped breaker mid-repair.

Myth: Pit or No Pit Doesn’t Change Which Model You Should Buy

Whether your garage has a pit, a flat slab, or a slightly sloped floor changes which automotive lift for home garage use actually fits well. In-ground and semi-recessed options exist, but most home garage installs we do in east-central Iowa are surface-mounted two-post or four-post units on a properly rated concrete pad. We always ask about floor thickness and condition before recommending a model, because a lift that’s perfect on paper can be the wrong choice if your slab isn’t rated for the anchor pull-out specs.

This is also where delivery logistics come in — we ask customers if there’s a forklift on site, how the garage door clearance looks, and whether there’s a straightforward path to get the columns and platform into the bay. Skipping this step is how installs get delayed or, worse, how a lift ends up sitting in a driveway because it doesn’t fit through the door it was measured for.

Myth: You Can Skip the Spec Comparison and Just “Buy What’s Popular”

The last myth is the most common: buying whatever brand is most talked about online without comparing actual numbers against your driveline and exhaust workflow. Popularity doesn’t tell you arm reach, rise height, or clearance under the crossbar. It doesn’t tell you whether the lift’s post placement will block your access to a rear differential or a battery pack mounted low in an EV chassis.
