Step one: budget tier and what each tier buys you
An automotive lift for home garage service comes in three honest budget tiers. The entry tier gets you a value-brand two-post lift, freight, and a self-install. That is the lowest-cost path and it works if you are comfortable with anchors, torque specs, and calibration. The middle tier gets you a mainstream brand like BendPak or Atlas Platinum with full install by a certified crew. The upper tier gets you a Rotary or Challenger commercial-grade lift with full install, extended warranty, and priority parts access for two decades.
For a restoration shop owner doing exhaust and driveline work at home on his personal builds, the middle tier is usually the right call. The upper tier is overkill for occasional weekend use. The entry tier is fine if the buyer is a competent installer, but the labor value of the install is worth more than the money saved for most buyers. For a full exhaust swap, the four-post frustrates you at every hanger and every muffler bracket.
A two-post lifts by the pinch welds and leaves the entire underside open. It gives you a full pass from bumper to bumper with no runway interference. Combined with a set of jack stands as a secondary support during long jobs, it is the shop layout every restoration builder wants. The only exception is if you plan to store a car under the lift long-term while you work on a second car on the lift. That is a four-post job. Restoration builds seldom need it.
Step three: capacity and arm configuration
Restoration builds run the full gamut of vehicle weights. A 1967 Camaro comes in around 3,400 lb curb. A 1972 K5 Blazer is closer to 5,200 lb. A 1966 Cadillac Fleetwood is 5,000 lb. A 1970 F-250 crew cab is 5,500 lb. For a restoration builder mixing among these, a 10,000 lb rated lift is comfortable margin. 9,000 lb rated is workable but tight on the heavier builds. 12,000 lb rated is unnecessary unless you are also doing dually work.
Arm configuration matters for the restoration mix. Older cars have wider wheelbases and softer pinch weld areas. Modern three-stage front arms with rubber pads or stackable adapters handle every pinch weld surface. Versymmetric arms cover both the long-wheelbase Blazer and the shorter-wheelbase Camaro from the same lift. We spec versymmetric on virtually every restoration-oriented automotive lift for home garage install because the workload variety is so wide. Ask specifically for versymmetric arms when you are quoting. Some dealers stock only asymmetric or only symmetric and will steer you accordingly.
Step four: ceiling and slab requirements in Cedar Falls
Cedar Falls has a mix of housing stock: some detached garages from the 1960s and 1970s with lower ceilings and thinner slabs, and some newer builds with taller ceilings and cleaner slabs. Measure your specific building before you order. A standard overhead two-post lift wants ten and a half to eleven feet of ceiling clearance minimum. Step five: cable inspection intervals over the lift’s life
Every wire-rope-equalized two-post lift has synchronizer cables that run through sheaves at the tops of the columns. Those cables are the single most safety-critical wear part on the lift. Inspection intervals matter. The ALI standard is a monthly visual inspection by the operator and an annual professional inspection by a certified inspector. Between the two, cable degradation is caught before it becomes a failure.
What to look for during a monthly visual: broken strands anywhere along the cable length, particularly at the sheave contact points; corrosion, especially in humid or unheated garages; and slack in either cable during a lift cycle. Any one of those three findings is a stop-the-lift-and-call-your-installer moment. On a healthy automotive lift for home garage cable system, you should see none of the three for the first six to eight years of moderate home use. Around year eight to ten, plan for a full cable replacement even if the cables still look serviceable. Replacing them at year ten on a schedule is much cheaper than replacing them at year twelve on an emergency call.
Step six: what a professional annual inspection covers
Our annual inspection on any lift we sell or service covers eight discrete checks. First, cable tension and condition at every sheave contact. Second, anchor torque on all four column base plates. Third, lock ladder engagement at every position throughout the lift stroke. Fourth, hydraulic fluid level, color, and clarity. Fifth, cylinder seal seep at both cylinders. Sixth, hose condition at all bends and fittings. Seventh, arm restraint pin engagement and gear-tooth condition. Eighth, level calibration between the columns.
An annual inspection takes about an hour and is inexpensive relative to the cost of the lift and the value of the vehicle on it.
