A rural farm shop owner up in northern Missouri called us this spring about an automotive lift for home garage duty at his place, primarily for suspension and shock replacement on his fleet of half-tons and his kids’ project cars. He had been shopping used lifts on farm auction sites and was leaning that way to save money. Before he bought anything, he asked for our honest read on used-versus-new and what to look for in either case. We spent an hour on the phone with him and then put together a written pre-purchase checklist he could carry with him to any auction preview. That checklist is what we want to share here. It applies whether you’re rural Missouri, rural Iowa, or anywhere the freight lanes are thin.

Used vs New: The Honest Tradeoff

Used lifts can be genuine bargains, but only if you know what you’re looking at. A used commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger two-post that has been sitting under a roof at a closed dealership can be a fantastic buy at fifty to sixty cents on the dollar. A used consumer-grade lift from an outdoor auction that spent two Iowa winters uncovered is almost never a bargain, no matter how cheap. Rust in cable strands is invisible until the cable fails, and a cable failure on a lift with a vehicle overhead is the sort of story you never want to be in.

The other issue with used is documentation. Manufacturers publish anchor patterns, torque specs, cable replacement intervals, and hydraulic fluid specs in their installation manuals. Used lifts often show up without any manuals at all. On our farm-shop customer’s shortlist there were three used candidates and one new. Two of the three used lifts came without any documentation, which meant either buying the manual separately if the manufacturer still supported it or making do without. For an automotive lift for home garage duty running suspension work, having correct anchor torque and correct cable inspection intervals in writing is not optional.

Checklist Item One: Verified Capacity for Your Actual Vehicles

Almost every home-garage buyer over-buys capacity or under-buys it, and both are expensive mistakes. Over-buying means paying for a 12,000-lb lift when a 9,000-lb lift would do everything you need. Under-buying means finding out the hard way that your three-quarter-ton diesel with a camper package exceeds the rating on your 8,000-lb four-post.

For a rural farm-shop application doing suspension and shock replacement, capacity math needs to include the heaviest thing you will ever put on the lift, not the average. On this customer’s fleet, the heaviest vehicle was a 6,900-lb loaded three-quarter-ton pickup. That put him firmly in the 9,000 or 10,000 lb class. A 7,000-lb rated lift would have technically lifted the truck, but with margin so thin that everything from unbalanced loading to the added weight of tools on the fender would matter. Give yourself a real margin. For any automotive lift for home garage doing farm-fleet work, a fifteen to twenty percent buffer above your heaviest vehicle is the right number. Not fifty percent, but not five either.

Checklist Item Two: Leg Configuration and Arm Reach

Two-post lifts come in symmetric and asymmetric leg configurations. Symmetric means the columns face each other with equal-length arms front and rear, ideal for centered loading of trucks and vans. Asymmetric means the columns are rotated so the front arms are shorter than the rear, which puts more of the passenger cabin in front of the columns for easier door-opening on cars.

For suspension and shock work on a mixed farm fleet, we usually recommend symmetric for trucks or a versatile-symmetric that can handle both. Pure asymmetric hurts you on trucks because the shorter front arms strain to reach the front lift points on a long-wheelbase pickup. Arm reach also matters: an arm that maxes out at a certain length will not reach the frame-lift points on the longest vehicles you own. Our farm-shop customer had a 21-foot dually crew cab in the fleet, and we specifically checked the arm reach on his candidate lifts to be sure they could handle it. Two of the three used candidates had older arms that would not reach. That killed those candidates.

Checklist Item Three: Vetting the Seller

Buying used at auction is a different animal from buying used from a shop that is closing down. Auction lots typically sell as-is with no representations about condition. Shop-closure sales often come with the ability to inspect the lift in place, ideally still bolted to the floor, ideally still functional. Always ask if you can cycle the lift under load before you commit. If the seller refuses, that tells you something.

Ask specifically for the lift’s install date, cycle count if the shop kept one, most recent cable inspection date, most recent hydraulic fluid change, and any repair history. On our checklist, we wrote a place for each of those to be recorded. A seller who cannot answer any of them is selling you a black box, and a black box is not a bargain even at fifty cents on the dollar. A seller who has all the answers is often willing to negotiate because they know the lift’s real value. For an automotive lift for home garage that will be trusted with your vehicles and your kids’ project cars for the next decade, seller vetting is not optional due diligence.

Checklist Item Four: Installation Reality

A used lift you buy at auction is not installed. You have to disassemble it from wherever it currently is, transport it home, and reinstall it in your shop. Column-mounted lifts weigh 800 to 1,200 lb per column. Cross-tubes and arms add another 400 to 600. Total move weight is typically 1,800 to 3,500 lb depending on model. You cannot handle that with a floor jack and a hand truck.

You also cannot legally or safely install a two-post lift with just two people and no experience. Column plumbing, anchor torque, cable tensioning, and hydraulic bleed all need to be done correctly or the lift will fail some or all of its safety functions. We offer install services on customer-supplied used lifts in the central Iowa and northern Missouri corridor for a flat rate that is usually one to two thousand dollars depending on distance and complexity. Adding that number to your used-lift bid is the honest way to compare against a new lift purchase with install included. Half the customers who run that math end up buying new, because the delta is not what they thought it was going in. That is worth knowing before you bid.

Checklist Item Five: Parts Availability

Cables, cylinder seals, arm restraint pins, safety-lock ladders, and hydraulic hoses all wear out. On a used lift from a defunct manufacturer, replacement parts range from expensive to impossible. On a used lift from a still-active brand like Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, or Atlas, parts are readily available and usually affordable. We stock the common wear items for every brand we sell, and we ship same-day when possible.

Before you buy any used lift, look up the manufacturer online and confirm they still exist. Look for their parts diagrams. Confirm that at least a cable set, a cylinder rebuild kit, and a set of arm restraint pins are still cataloged for your specific model. If any of those come back as unavailable, walk away no matter how cheap the lift itself is. An automotive lift for home garage with no parts pipeline is a paperweight the day it needs its first repair. Our northern Missouri customer’s third used candidate failed this test, because it was a defunct brand from the early 2000s. He is now on our new-lift shortlist instead, and he will get another decade of service life on the other side.

What the Farm-Shop Customer Ultimately Chose

After the checklist filtered his four options, only the new lift and one used lift were still standing. The used lift was a five-year-old Challenger two-post at a shop closure sale in southern Iowa, indoor stored, full documentation, and the seller allowed a load cycle demonstration. The new lift was a comparable Challenger CL10 asymmetric direct from us with install included. The used price plus our install-only service came within about fifteen percent of the new price with install.

He ultimately went new because the fifteen percent premium bought him a full manufacturer warranty, brand-new cables, brand-new hydraulic components, and our multi-year post-install support relationship. If the used lift had been thirty or forty percent cheaper all-in, the calculus would have flipped. That’s the honest way to make a used-vs-new decision on any automotive lift for home garage duty. Run the whole math, not just the sticker price. The right answer will present itself.
