A heavy-duty truck shop owner in Urbandale asked us for a real, itemized cost breakdown of installing an automotive lift for home garage wheel bearing service in a new outbuilding on his property. He runs a class-six-through-eight truck operation during the week and wanted a small-vehicle lift at home for personal cars, family cars, and the occasional side job. He also wanted the numbers written down. He is a shop owner, so he thinks in line items, and he did not want a marketing brochure. This article is that breakdown, from lift purchase through installation, delivered with the same directness he asked for and applicable to any Iowa buyer.

The Urbandale shop this cost breakdown came from

He owns a heavy truck service shop with three commercial lifts already running eighty hours a week. At home, in a new 36-by-48 outbuilding he built last summer, he wanted an automotive lift for home garage duty that could handle his personal fleet: a three-quarter-ton pickup, his wife’s SUV, and a project car he has owned since college. The building was framed for lift use, which is not always true, and that changed the electrical and structural line items compared to a retrofit into an existing garage.

His most common expected job at home is wheel bearing service, which is asymmetric-load work on a two-post and easier to do at a proper working height than on jack stands. Wheel bearing service on modern trucks and SUVs is common between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, and doing it at home for family vehicles saves both money and time. That is the use case we spec’d around, and the cost breakdown reflects that. If your use case is closer to storage, the numbers will look different, and we will note where.

Wheel bearing service capacity requirements

Wheel bearing service does not require the biggest lift in the catalog, but it does require enough rated capacity to handle the heaviest vehicle you plan to service, plus a margin for the side load of pressing or pulling a stubborn hub. For an Urbandale buyer with a three-quarter-ton pickup at roughly 6,500 lb, a 10,000 lb two-post is the correct spec. That gives 50 percent margin over static load and comfortably handles any dynamic side load you will produce with a slide hammer or a press.

Two-post is the right configuration for this job because you need the wheels off the ground and out of the way. A four-post with a jack tray works but adds load-unload time on every job. Build-out sequencing: what happens when

The Urbandale outbuilding was framed and slabbed but not yet electrified or drywalled when we did the site survey. That let us sequence the lift install in the right order, which matters for cost. Correct sequence: slab pour first, electrical rough-in second, lift delivery third, lift install fourth, drywall and finish work last. Wrong sequence: drywall first, then try to figure out where the lift goes. We have unwound the wrong sequence too many times.

On the Urbandale job, the slab was already correct at six inches with 3,500 psi and rebar on 16-inch centers. The electrical was next. We coordinated with his electrician to add the 220V single-phase circuit for the lift at the same time as the general shop wiring, which saved a return trip and about $200 in mobilization. The lift arrived a week later, went in over one work day, and drywall followed the following week. That sequence is the cheapest and cleanest, and we recommend it to every new-build home shop.

Concrete, electrical, and door work

Concrete on a new build should be six inches at 3,000 psi minimum with proper rebar or fiber. That was already true in Urbandale. On a retrofit into an existing garage, we sometimes have to saw-cut and repour a footprint, which adds a real line item of several hundred to two thousand dollars depending on square footage. If you can pour right the first time, do it.

Electrical for an automotive lift for home garage installation runs 220V single-phase, 20 to 30 amp dedicated circuit, with a NEMA 6-20 or 6-30 outlet within twenty feet of the power unit location. New-build cost is typically a few hundred dollars added onto general shop electrical. Retrofit into an existing panel adds a subpanel or a new breaker plus wire run, and depending on distance can approach $500 to $800. Overhead door work sometimes matters too. If the door track blocks the lift envelope, you may need a jackshaft opener or a taller door track, both of which have real cost.

Line-by-line cost breakdown

Here is the actual breakdown for the Urbandale job. Lift purchase, 10,000 lb two-post from a top-brand distributor: mid-thousands. Freight from our Ames warehouse to his Urbandale address: a few hundred dollars with residential lift-gate delivery. Anchor kit and hardware included with lift. Rented forklift for unload: about $200 for a half-day. Installation labor by our team, two techs for one day: mid-hundreds. Electrical labor for the dedicated circuit, coordinated with his electrician: mid-hundreds.

Miscellaneous: hydraulic fluid top-off (comes with the lift but we always keep a spare gallon: under $50), torque wrench if you do not own one (about $40), safety glasses and gloves that you should already have. Total for the Urbandale automotive lift for home garage install came in at the low five-figures all-in. That is a real number for a real quality lift with real installation. Cheaper is possible but comes with tradeoffs on brand, warranty, or self-install labor. Anything much more expensive is scope creep or an over-spec lift.

What the total came to and where the money went

Roughly 70 percent of the total was the lift itself. About 10 percent was freight and unload. About 15 percent was installation labor. The remaining 5 percent was electrical and miscellaneous.
