The Rotary SPO10 and Challenger CL10 are both 10,000-pound versymmetric two-post lifts with three-stage front arms, two-stage rear arms, and drive-thru clearance in the 100-inch neighborhood. On paper, the spec sheets read almost identically. Both use dual hydraulic cylinders with equalizer cables, both have mechanical lock ladders every couple of inches, both come standard with a pair of 3-inch pad extensions in the box. Both are ETL/ALI Gold certified and carry Automotive Lift Institute compliance labels, which matters if your insurance carrier ever asks. For an Iowa City buyer choosing an automotive lift for home garage plus occasional shop overflow use, either lift will do the job for the next twenty years.

Where they differ is under the skin. Rotary has been building two-post lifts since the 1920s and has the deepest parts catalog in the industry: you can order a replacement lock pin for a decades-old SPO7 and get it in a couple of days. Challenger is newer to the two-post market (they came from parking-lift heritage) but their CL10 uses a very common cylinder and cable spec that is easy to source aftermarket. Both are solid choices, and picking between them is really a bet on which parts pipeline serves your zip code better a decade from now.

Oil-Change Workflow: Which Lift Moves Faster

An oil change on a two-post lift is one of the fastest jobs in the shop, but the arm-swing sequence differs slightly between the SPO10 and CL10. On the SPO10, the front arm restraint releases with an upward pull on a plastic collar, which is intuitive but requires an extra reach on a lifted truck. The CL10 uses a spring-loaded gear-driven arm restraint that clicks into position automatically as you swing the arm; you don’t have to touch it, you just position the pad and it locks. For a shop where every second of oil-change throughput matters, that is a real advantage on the Challenger side.

On the other hand, the SPO10’s arm pads sit slightly higher in their retracted position, which means less bending when a low sedan pulls onto the lift. If you’re doing an oil change on a Miata or a Civic, the Rotary reaches its lift points without ever putting the arm in a bind. Either lift is a legitimate automotive lift for home garage use where oil changes will be a big share of your work, but small ergonomic details like these matter over ten thousand cycles. Brand History and What It Means for Twenty-Year Owners

Rotary Lift was founded in 1925 in Memphis and today operates out of Madison, Indiana. They are owned by Vehicle Service Group, the same corporate parent as Forward, Direct-Lift, and several other brands, which means the parts and dealer network stretches across every state. When we call Rotary at nine in the morning for a warranty ram, we can usually have it on a truck by that afternoon. Challenger Lifts is based in Louisville, Kentucky, and while their corporate history is shorter, their two-post line has been in continuous production long enough that every part we’ve ever needed for a CL10 is available on the shelf, not on backorder.

Both Rotary and Challenger have earned that trust, but the tie-breaker for us has traditionally been Rotary’s slightly longer history and slightly deeper legacy-parts catalog. The Parts Pipeline Reality in Eastern Iowa

Iowa City Fitment Considerations

Iowa City has a lot of postwar detached garages with 8-foot ceilings and a lot of 1990s pole-barn shops with 14-foot ceilings; very little in between. If your automotive lift for home garage is going into a lower-ceiling garage, neither the SPO10 nor the CL10 will fit in overhead form, and you should be looking at a baseplate variant. For a 14-foot pole barn, either overhead lift installs cleanly with room to spare for a mid-rise truck.

The other Iowa City-specific issue is slab thickness. A lot of the older detached garages here were poured on 3-inch slabs with no reinforcement, and neither manufacturer will certify a 10K lift on a 3-inch slab. We do a lot of core-drill inspections for Iowa City buyers before we quote a lift, and if the slab is marginal we recommend either dropping to a 9K rating and running longer anchors, or pouring a lift pad. That extra pour usually runs a couple thousand dollars but it buys you decades of trouble-free service. Five-Year and Ten-Year Cost of Ownership

Both lifts hold their retail value well over a five-year horizon. Used Rotary SPO10s in good condition tend to sell for 60 to 70 percent of new retail at year five, and Challenger CL10s track very close behind. Neither brand depreciates the way a garage-brand offshore lift does; those often sell for around 30 percent of retail at year three because buyers know parts are a hunt.

The bigger cost story is service parts. Plan on replacing the equalizer cables every ten to fifteen years, more often if you’re heavy-cycling the lift daily. Cable sets run in the low hundreds for either brand and are a two-hour job to swap. Hydraulic seal kits are cheap and are typically a once-in-fifteen-years replacement. Arm pin bushings will need attention around year seven to ten if you run a lot of cycles. Nobody buying a proper automotive lift for home garage in the SPO10 or CL10 class should expect to spend more than a few hundred dollars a year on wear parts, and most years it will be zero. That is a huge advantage over air compressors, MIG welders, and every other piece of shop equipment that has moving consumables you go through by the case.
