A mobile mechanic in the Davenport area called us this spring about putting an automotive lift for home garage duty into a twenty-four by thirty detached shop behind his house. He does tire rotations, brake work, and general maintenance out of his van most days, but he wanted a proper lift at home for the jobs that take longer than a driveway visit allows. His concrete was three years old, poured with a light rebar mat, and he had budget for the lift plus install but not much room to overspend. Here is exactly what we spec’d, why we made those calls, and how the install ran.

Meet the Davenport install we did last month

His truck is a 3/4-ton and his family drives a mid-size SUV, so we started the sizing conversation around a 9,000 lb capacity. He also mentioned he does the occasional out-of-warranty diesel for friends, which we noted but did not use to size up. The reason: it is almost always cheaper to send one heavier vehicle out of the shop once a quarter than to double your lift cost carrying capacity you use twice a year. That is a principle we apply to almost every automotive lift for home garage build we quote in eastern Iowa.

He was leaning two-post at first because that is what he is used to at commercial shops, but we walked him through the tradeoffs. Two-post is faster for wheels-off work, but it needs six inches of good concrete and it does not double as vehicle storage. A four-post with slide jacks is slightly slower for a single tire rotation, but it does storage, it is easier on marginal concrete, and it is more forgiving when your ceiling is under twelve feet. He landed on a 9,000 lb four-post with a rolling jack platform, which is the setup we install most often for exactly this profile of buyer.

Concrete slab thickness for an automotive lift for home garage

The single most common question we get on a home install is whether the slab is thick enough. His pour was nominal four-inch with fiber, plus a light welded-wire mat. That is on the thin end of acceptable for a 9,000 lb four-post because a four-post spreads its load through four column bases and the runways carry the vehicle weight directly to those columns. For a 10K or a two-post, we would have wanted six inches minimum. Any automotive lift for home garage buyer whose slab is under four inches needs to have the concrete conversation up front before they order anything.

We drilled test cores with his permission at each of the four column locations before we anchored. Two of the four cores hit rebar within the top inch and a half, which was the poor luck of a slab where the rebar had floated during finishing. We shifted one column six inches inboard to catch a cleaner spot, verified the load path was still square, and moved on. That kind of on-site adjustment is normal and it costs nothing when the installer knows what to look for. It is the kind of detail that makes the difference between a clean anchor set and a slab crack six months in.

Why rebar matters more than most people think

Home garage buyers focus on slab thickness because it is the number they can read off a spec sheet. Slab thickness matters, but rebar and mesh matter more, and the finish of the concrete matters almost as much. A four-inch pour with proper number-four rebar on eighteen-inch centers can carry a home garage lift comfortably. A six-inch pour with no reinforcement and a smooth trowel finish can crack under the same load. Reinforcement holds the slab together under localized load and keeps small cracks from becoming structural ones.

Our Davenport owner had a light mat, which is common in three to five year old residential slabs, and it worked out fine for his 9K four-post. If he had wanted a 10K two-post we would have suggested cutting the slab out under each of the two column bases and pouring new footings with proper rebar, or moving the lift to a different section of the shop with a thicker pour. There is no shame in either fix. What causes problems is skipping the check entirely and finding out later. On every automotive lift for home garage quote we do, we ask about slab age, thickness, and reinforcement in the first phone call.

Tire rotation and wheel work as the daily driver task

Since he is a mobile mechanic, the day-to-day work at his home shop is tire rotation, brake pad and rotor replacement, and the occasional wheel bearing repack. On the new four-post with a rolling jack platform, the workflow is: drive the vehicle up the ramps, set the parking brake, chock the tires, raise the deck to a comfortable height, slide the jack platform under the axle, lift the axle off the runways, remove the wheels, and work. It is a two-minute setup after the first couple of runs. The lock stops every two to two and a half inches let him fine-tune to his own hip height rather than reaching up or crouching down.

The other benefit for a mobile mechanic is documentation. His customers get a photo of their tire tread depths, brake pad thickness, and any rust or corrosion he flags. Doing that on a lift with good lighting is dramatically easier than crawling under the vehicle with a phone camera. His close rate on flagged work has climbed noticeably since he installed the lift, and he attributes most of it to the photos he can now send while the customer is still standing in their driveway. That is a business return that pays off the lift faster than most people plan for.

Layout in a twenty-four by thirty detached shop

His shop is twenty-four wide by thirty deep with two overhead doors. We put the lift down the driver-side wall with the columns four feet off the wall so the front column would not conflict with his air compressor. That left roughly fourteen feet of open floor for a workbench, tool boxes, and a rolling parts cart. He can walk around the lift with a vehicle on it and reach any point of the vehicle without moving anything else. That is the layout target for any automotive lift for home garage build: enough clearance to walk a full loop and enough side space to pull tools or wheels off without stepping over anything.

Ceiling was ten feet clear at the truss chord and eleven feet at the peak, which capped his maximum lifting height at about six and a half feet under the runways on his tallest vehicle. That is enough to stand under most vehicles for oil pans, transmissions, and exhaust work, but a very tall owner would want more room. We measured his standing height against a mock-up before he committed. If your ceiling is under ten feet, that measurement is not optional.

Total install time and what surprised the owner

Two techs, one forklift, one full working day. We staged the shop the night before, drilled and anchored in the morning, ran the hydraulics after lunch, and did his walk-through and paperwork around 4 p.m. He drove his own truck up the ramps that same evening. The thing that surprised him most was how quiet the power unit was. He expected shop-noise and got closer to appliance-noise. That is a difference between older commercial hydraulic units and the current generation, and it matters more in a home shop than in a commercial bay.

He also noted that the ramps were shorter than he expected. A standard four-post ramp is designed to work with typical passenger cars and light trucks. If his customer base ever grew into lowered sport sedans, he would want to add extended ramps or use a set of aluminum drive-on lead plates. We keep those in stock for exactly this reason. Most owners never need them, but the ones who do are usually surprised that a stock ramp does not clear their own car. Ask the question during the quote and you will not be surprised on delivery day.
