Picking an automotive lift for home garage engine work — specifically oil pan gasket jobs, where you need clear frame-rail access and hours of overhead time under a suspended engine — is a different decision than picking a lift for tire rotations. Start with the job, not the lift

There is a hierarchy of what you can and cannot cut. Everything else is optional or deferrable. If you’re squeezing budget, cut the drip trays, cut the alignment turnplates, cut the drive-on ramps. Do not cut the cylinder brand, the certification, or the anchors.
Tier one, then, is a certified name-brand two-post with symmetric or asymmetric columns, standard rise, and a factory hydraulic unit. Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger CL10 are the reference points. Tier two adds tall rise for taller vehicles or truck work. Tier three adds versymmetric geometry so you can flip between symmetric and asymmetric arm configs. Tier four adds accessories like drop-in truck adapters and alignment turnplates. The crew chief bought at tier one and added a set of frame-cradle pad adapters for his Corvette. Total spend was substantially less than what he had budgeted, because we walked him off the tier three lift he didn’t need.
Brand history and why it matters for parts
Rotary has been building lifts since 1925 — the two-post design language is a hundred years of iteration. Challenger has been in the game since the 1970s and shares a lot of engineering DNA with the commercial Vehicle Service Group. Both companies maintain parts catalogs going back decades. When we service a 1994 Rotary SPOA9 in an Iowa dealership, we can still ship the equalizer cable, the safety pawl, and the cylinder seal kit next-day.
That is not true of the parade of house-brand importers whose lifts you’ll see advertised on Facebook Marketplace and end-of-aisle at big-box tool stores. Those brands change names every three to five years, and when the current importer stops sourcing the model, parts availability disappears. For an automotive lift for home garage service you expect to keep for the life of the shop, brand history is the single best predictor of whether you can still get parts in 2045. Every quote we send names the manufacturer and the year the model has been in production, because that context changes what you’re actually buying.
Oil pan work: the working posture that decides everything
An oil pan gasket job on a modern V8 takes two to four hours. Most of it is spent with your head under the pan, working bolts in an inch-and-a-half of clearance, feeling for gasket seating, and rotating up to check torque specs on the chart above your bench. Working posture matters more than working height. You want the pan itself at somewhere between chest and shoulder height, so your elbows are at the same level as your hands and you’re not holding your arms overhead for two hours.
On a two-post automotive lift for home garage use, that puts the vehicle roughly at head height for a six-foot person, which is a lock or two below full extension. The Council Bluffs crew chief specifically requested a lift with dense safety-cam lock spacing — every two to two and a half inches — because he’d wrestled with lifts elsewhere that only had five or six discrete lock positions across the whole rise. Fine-grained lock spacing turns a lift from a two-position device (up or down) into a proper adjustable workstation. Ask this question of any seller before you buy.
Ceiling, floor, and how a race shop plans around them
Our Council Bluffs customer’s shop had 12-foot ceilings and a six-inch slab poured for a heavier commercial rating — that’s what happens when a crew chief plans a shop instead of a homeowner. He was overprepared on both counts, which we love, because it meant we could quote a tall-rise lift and torque anchors to full spec without needing to cut and pour a new anchor pad.
Most home shops are not that. The typical residential garage we install into has 9 to 10 foot ceilings and a nominal four-inch slab. Both those numbers cap what lift you can install. A 9-foot ceiling knocks out standard-rise two-posts on anything but sedans. A questionable slab needs verification with a rebar meter and possibly a supplemental anchor pad pour. Give us honest numbers up front and we plan accordingly.
