An automotive lift for home garage use is one of the smartest tool purchases a mobile mechanic can make, and last spring we installed one for a technician working out of the Cedar Rapids area who wanted a permanent oil-service bay closer to home. He was tired of sliding around on a creeper for basic fluid work, and he wanted a rig that could hold a full-size truck steady while he grabbed lunch. This install is a case study in doing the boring homework, a real site survey, before we ever load a lift on the truck. The First Call: What We Ask Before Quoting

We do not quote an automotive lift for home garage off a website form. We call. That first conversation for the Cedar Rapids technician lasted about twenty minutes, and it saved us both from ordering the wrong rig. We asked what he was going to lift, daily driver, three-quarter ton work truck, or a jacked-up diesel, and what the heaviest vehicle would be. Seven thousand pounds covered his passenger cars, but the moment he mentioned a diesel Silverado we jumped him to a nine-thousand-pound rating with room to spare.

Then we walked through what he actually planned to do under it. Oil service is a lot of drain-plug work at chin height, some transmission pan drops, and the occasional differential flush. He was not doing frame-off restorations. That matters, because it steered him toward a symmetric-arm two-post with tall drive-thru columns and a good set of stackable pad adapters. We finished the call with a full checklist of measurements he would take himself over the weekend and text back to us Monday, and that homework became the real quote.

Measuring the Bay Before You Buy an Automotive Lift for Home Garage

He measured three things on that Sunday: bay width at the widest, bay depth, and ceiling height at the lowest point, not the peak. His pole building was thirty feet wide, but the actual stall he planned to use was fourteen feet across, which is comfortable. A two-post needs about eleven to twelve feet minimum column-to-column, plus arm swing space to lay the pads on the pinch welds. Ceiling was twelve feet six inches to the trusses, and that ruled in the short overhead-shutoff two-post but ruled out any four-post with a full raise past seventy-eight inches lifted plus tall vehicle.

The other measurement people forget is the door opening. If the garage door header is eight feet, you cannot roll a raised truck out on a four-post because the drive-on ramps and rear stop will hit the header on the way out. We measured his overhead door at ten feet wide by nine feet tall, which is plenty. The last dimension is column footprint versus the wall. A two-post column base is roughly twenty-two by twenty-two inches with anchor bolts, and it needs at least three feet of clear floor space in front of the column for the arm to swing out flat and settle on a low car.

Slab and Concrete Reality Check

Concrete is the part of every automotive lift for home garage sale that owners underestimate. Manufacturers publish a minimum, and for most two-post lifts in the seven-to-ten-thousand-pound class that minimum is four inches of three-thousand-PSI concrete. His pole building had a poured floor from three years back and he thought it was four inches, but thought is not a specification. We had him drill a small test core near the planned column location so we could measure it with a tape and see aggregate.

The core came back four and a quarter inches, no rebar, which is normal for a residential pole-building slab. That is enough for the lift he chose, no need to saw-cut and pour a footing pad. If it had come back at three inches or less, we would have specified either a poured-in-place footing pad about thirty-six by thirty-six inches under each column, or steered him to a four-post that spreads the load across four smaller footprints. Cracks near the anchor location or expansion joints running directly under a column are also disqualifiers, and we walked the whole slab with him over video before finalizing anchor positions.

Wiring the Automotive Lift for Home Garage

Power is where a lot of first-time buyers get surprised. Most two-post lifts in the residential range run on 220V single-phase, drawing around fifteen amps under load. His pole building already had a subpanel with a hundred amps available, so we specified a dedicated twenty-amp 220 circuit with a plug outlet mounted on the column-side wall about six feet up. That plug lets him unplug the power unit when he is done, which nobody thinks about but every insurance underwriter appreciates. It also lets him pull the power unit for winter storage without cutting a hardwire.

There are 110V lifts on the market, smaller mid-rise scissors and some hobbyist four-posts, and they will do oil changes fine but they raise slower and they cannot handle the same weight class. If your only supply is a standard fifteen-amp 110 outlet and you cannot run a new circuit, tell us before you shop. We will help you decide between running the wire and picking a smaller lift. For his shop, running the 220 was cheap: forty feet of 10-3 romex, one double-pole breaker, and one industrial-grade outlet, all done in an afternoon.

Two-Post or Four-Post for Oil Service

For a mobile mechanic focused on oil service, the answer is almost always a two-post with symmetric arms. You get open access to the drain plug, the filter, and the underside components without a runway blocking your line of sight. He asked whether a scissor lift would be cheaper for what he was doing, and we told him honestly: mid-rise scissors are not cheaper, they cost about the same, and they only raise you to belt-buckle height. Great for tires and brakes, not great for standing under a truck.

The trade-off is storage. A four-post lets you park one vehicle underneath and store another on top, and several of our home-garage customers pick a four-post specifically for that reason even though they also do oil changes on it. For a working mobile mechanic doing paid jobs, the two-post won every time we ran the numbers with him. He chose a nine-thousand-pound-rated two-post with a twelve-foot overhead configuration and short-swing arms, a solid daily-driver setup for the passenger cars and light trucks he actually sees on his route.

What Install Day Actually Looks Like

Install day for an automotive lift for home garage on a properly prepped slab is one long day, not a weekend. Our two-installer crew rolled up around eight-thirty, drove the truck as close to the bay as we could, and used a pallet jack to move the crated columns inside. First hour is unpacking, inventorying every bolt and hydraulic fitting, and laying the columns down in position to mark anchor holes. Then we hammer-drilled the anchor holes to spec, vacuumed the dust out, and set the wedge anchors with a torque wrench.

Standing the columns is a two-person lift with a strap, and once they are plumb we install the overhead crossbeam, thread the equalizer cables, install the hydraulic power unit, and fill the fluid reservoir. We ran his 220V circuit while the cables settled, then cycled the lift up and down empty five or six times to bleed the hydraulics and verify that both carriages traveled in sync. Final step is engaging the safety locks, they click roughly every two and a half inches, and running through the operator manual with him at the control post before we left.

The First Week Back on Oil Changes

He called us the following Friday. He had already done nineteen oil changes on the lift that week, and he wanted us to know two things. First, his back felt better than it had in years. Second, he was billing an hour less per job because he was not fighting a jack and stands.
