The base lift is the biggest line, and the range is wide. For a quality automotive lift for home garage service, plan on the low four figures for an entry-level 8,000 pound four-post from a reputable brand, mid four figures for a heavier 9,000 to 10,000 pound four-post from Rotary or BendPak, and mid-to-upper four figures for a commercial-grade two-post with certified components. The temptation for someone who runs quick-lubes professionally is to buy the fanciest lift on the wall. Resist. Match capacity and features to what you actually do at home.

Two-post lifts price higher than equivalent-capacity four-posts because the engineering is denser — heavier columns, cross-tube, arm sets, and safety systems. If you’re doing brake and suspension work at home, that price gap is worth it. If you’re doing oil changes and storage, it isn’t. A quick-lube operator who spends all day on drive-on rack lifts often overvalues the two-post configuration at home because it’s what they don’t have at work. Ask yourself honestly what percentage of home hours involve wheels-off jobs. Under 30 percent, buy a four-post with a rolling jack for the occasional wheels-off task. Over 50 percent, buy the two-post. That single decision drives a meaningful chunk of the total budget.

Freight, unloading, and delivery to the corridor

A two-post install runs six to nine hours because anchoring, plumbing the hydraulic lines, and squaring the columns is more delicate. You can DIY either job if you’re mechanical and patient, but you need a torque wrench, a laser level, and the time to do it right.

What we include in a professional install: anchoring per manufacturer spec (with the correct anchors for your slab thickness), leveling the columns to true vertical, tensioning the four cables on a four-post to spec, hydraulic hookup and bleed, a full-cycle test to top of travel and back down under load, safety-cam and arm-restraint verification, and a walkthrough with you on daily operation. What we don’t include: pouring or repairing concrete, electrical service to the lift location, or any structural modifications to your building. Those are separate line items. For a quick-lube operator setting up an automotive lift for home garage use, our recommendation is: pay for the pro install once, watch every step, and you’ll never need us again for that lift unless something breaks.

Electrical service to the lift location

Most residential two-post and heavier four-post lifts run on 220-volt single-phase power. That’s the same circuit as an electric dryer or a welder, and if your home garage doesn’t already have one, you need an electrician before install day. Budget for a dedicated 30-amp 220V circuit, GFCI protected, dropped near the power unit location on the lift. In the corridor, an electrician install of a new 220V circuit in an existing garage runs anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand depending on distance from the panel and any load calculations that trigger a service upgrade.

A minority of lower-capacity four-post lifts run on 110V single-phase, which is your normal outlet. That’s a convenience because you skip the electrician bill entirely, but the tradeoff is slower rise time and, in some cases, a lighter-duty power unit. For quick-lube operators used to commercial three-phase lifts at work, the shift to single-phase at home is fine — the amp draw and cycle count in a home garage don’t justify three-phase, and running three-phase into a residential garage requires a phase converter or a service upgrade that isn’t worth it. If your local codes require a dedicated disconnect within sight of the lift, add that to the electrician’s scope. It’s a simple part but it needs to be there for future safety inspections.

Bay layout and workflow around the lift

How you lay out the bay matters more than most first-time buyers expect. A four-post automotive lift for home garage service takes roughly 9 feet of width including walking room and 20 feet of length including approach ramps. A two-post needs 12 to 13 feet of width because the columns anchor outboard of the vehicle, and about 25 feet of length including door swing for the arms. Draw your garage floor to scale, cut out a paper rectangle for the lift, and see what else fits around it.

Multiply that time savings by every bearing job you do for family and side customers over a decade of ownership, and the lift’s total cost drops to zero on labor alone.

Other high-value jobs an automotive lift for home garage use unlocks: transmission fluid flushes with the pan down for real cleaning, brake caliper rebuilds without knee pain, sway bar and control arm replacement, catalytic converter and exhaust work, and any body underside inspection that involves poking at rust. The lift also gives you a proper platform for teaching — if you’re raising kids or nieces who want to learn cars, working at chest height while they watch is safer and more educational than crawling under on the ground.
