A crew chief in southeast Iowa called us during the off-season with a familiar problem: the team had outgrown its shared shop time and needed to build a home base for winter rebuilds and summer storage. He wanted an automotive lift for home garage use that could carry a fully-loaded late-model stock car on a trailer chassis, hold it for weeks between events, and still lift the tow rig for oil changes. Step One: Set the Real Budget
Most racing shops we talk to start by asking about the cheapest lift that will do the job. That framing hides the actual cost. The real budget for a home garage lift has three lines: the hardware, the install, and twenty years of consumables. On a name-brand 9,000-pound four-post, the hardware is the biggest single line, but it is only about sixty to seventy percent of what you will spend over the lift’s life. Freight, install, an air-line kit, rolling jacks, and cable replacement at year twelve or fifteen fill in the rest. When you look at that whole picture, the difference between a mid-tier import and a Rotary or BendPak drops from thousands of dollars to hundreds — spread across two decades.
The crew chief’s opening budget was too low for what he actually wanted. Once we walked the whole twenty-year total, he moved up two tiers without hesitation. That is not a sales pitch; that is what happens when you show a numbers person the numbers.
Step Two: Match Capacity to the Heaviest Vehicle
An automotive lift for home garage duty needs to be rated for the heaviest thing you will ever put on it, plus a comfortable margin. For a racing team, the heaviest thing is usually the tow rig, not the race car. A three-quarter-ton crew cab pickup fully fueled and loaded runs 7,500 to 8,500 pounds. Add a bed cover, a service body, or a fifth-wheel hitch and you clear 9,000. That pushed our crew chief straight to a 9,000-pound four-post as the floor, with 10,000 or 12,000 on the table if he wanted to future-proof for a diesel truck upgrade. He chose 10K, which is the sweet spot for teams that run heavier tow rigs.
Skimping on capacity is the most expensive mistake a new lift buyer makes. Downsizing later means paying for a second lift; the first one becomes a paperweight or a Craigslist post. Better to buy one class higher than you think you need now.
Step Three: Pick a Configuration for the Automotive Lift for Home Garage Layout
Four-post lifts come in a few flavors: standard length, extended length, and wide (for dually pickups or full-size trailers). A race team storing a car on the platform while towing home with the truck almost always needs extended length. The extra runway length lets a stock car with a lengthy wheelbase sit centered without hanging off the ends. The wide-track option matters if the tow rig is a dually or if the team runs a full-size enclosed trailer that gets parked underneath during off-weeks.
Standard-length four-posts start around 200 inches of runway. Extended runs 220 to 240. Wide adds about ten inches between the runways. In a 40-foot pole building with plenty of side clearance, we default to the extended-length model for teams — the difference in floor space used is tiny, and the difference in usability is large. That was the choice in southeast Iowa.
Step Four: Overhead or Baseplate
Four-posts are all overhead by design — the cross-tube up top ties the columns together and carries the safety limit switch. That is not a decision point for four-posts. But if a race team is also considering a two-post as a second lift for engine and driveline work, the overhead-versus-baseplate question comes up. Baseplate two-posts route their hydraulic lines along the floor between the columns; overhead two-posts route them across the top. Baseplate loses about six inches of vertical clearance at the ground; overhead loses about six inches at the ceiling. For a 12-foot sidewall pole building, overhead is usually the right call.
The crew chief eventually added a two-post six months after the four-post install. That is the pattern we see with most serious teams — start with the storage lift, add the service lift once you have earned the second bay. Step Five: Twenty-Year Cost of Ownership
Here is the honest math for a name-brand 10,000-pound four-post over twenty years in an Iowa shop. Hardware runs mid five figures depending on brand and options. Install with delivery adds roughly ten to fifteen percent. Cable replacement at year twelve to fifteen runs a few hundred in parts and a half-day of labor if you hire it out. Occasional sheave lubrication, a couple of new safety-lock springs, and maybe a cylinder seal kit at year eighteen round out the wear. Total over twenty years, all in, is on the order of one to two used race motors. Divided by 240 months of use, that is cheap floor space.
Compare that to a bargain import lift with no parts support: replacement cables cost the same, but you cannot find them; replacement sheaves cost the same, but they are not made anymore; the whole lift becomes scrap at year eight. A cheap automotive lift for home garage use is not cheap — it is a shorter lease on the same tool.
Step Six: What to Ask the Installer
Before you sign anything, ask the installer three questions. First, will they come out and lay the lift down before install so you can see the footprint on your actual concrete? We do this in Iowa on request; a good installer anywhere else will offer the same. Second, what is the parts lead time when a cable, sheave, or spring finally needs replacing? Same-day-ship from a US warehouse is the answer you want. Third, do they install what they sell, or do they subcontract? Direct install by the same company that sold the lift means the anchors, torque specs, and shim stack are done to spec.
The southeast Iowa install went in over two days. Concrete was five-inch fresh pour with rebar; anchors landed clean. First lift with a tow truck aboard was smooth. Second season is coming up and the crew chief has already recommended us to two other teams.
Step Seven: When Racing Adds Special Requirements
Racing operations sometimes need details a general home-garage buyer does not: extra tie-down points for storing a rolling chassis, a longer approach ramp for a low-splitter race car, or a rated capacity higher than the tow rig demands because the team also lifts trailered heavy equipment.
