Restoration shops need the vehicle up in the air for weeks at a time, they weld and grind while it is up there, and the lift’s hydraulic cylinders take punishment no service bay ever inflicts. Step 1: What Does Restoration Actually Ask of a Lift?

Restoration work sits on a lift longer than any other job in a garage. A frame-off Camaro can occupy the same lift for six months. That changes what you should buy. The cylinder is under sustained load the whole time. The safety locks are engaged constantly. The arm-restraint gears see hundreds of position changes as the customer rotates around the vehicle. A commercial lift built for eight cycles a day handles this fine; a hobby lift built for twenty cycles a year eventually shows wear you did not expect. When we spec an automotive lift for home garage restoration duty, we push customers toward Rotary or Challenger commercial-grade two-post lifts. A restoration shop should not shop by lowest price. Shop by cylinder rebuildability, arm-restraint quality, and parts availability. The lift you buy for restoration work should have replacement parts you can order in twenty years, not one that goes dark when the importer stops carrying spares. Step 3: 2-Post, 4-Post, or Scissor for Metal Work?

For metal work, welding, grinding, panel replacement, and floor-pan repair, a two-post is again the winner. Nothing is in your way. You can walk under the entire vehicle, work overhead with a MIG or TIG at any point along the floor, and pull the wheels for suspension work in the same session. A four-post limits you: the runways sit in the way of the lower rockers, and hopping on and off the ramps to reach different areas of the underbody gets old. A scissor mid-rise is even worse for restoration; you cannot walk under it and the platform is in your way. If your Dubuque shop can support a two-post, buy the two-post. The single biggest mistake we see is customers letting a weeping cylinder go, then losing pressure entirely mid-lift. Step 5: Overhead vs Baseplate Configuration for Your Ceiling

Restoration shops with tall ceilings can go either way. Restoration shops with tight ceilings, and most home-garage-based restoration shops are tight, should go baseplate. An overhead two-post routes the equalizer cables through a bar at the top that connects the two columns; you need clear ceiling height for that bar. A baseplate two-post routes the cables through the slab, which requires a saw-cut trench during install but frees the ceiling entirely. If your Dubuque restoration bay has ten feet of clear height or less, baseplate is the correct answer. If you have twelve feet or more, overhead is the more common choice because installation is simpler and the trench is not required. We ask every restoration customer their exact ceiling height before we quote an automotive lift for home garage configuration. If you have any doubt, err on the side of baseplate; you can always add ceiling later, you cannot always cut trench later.

Step 6: Arms, Adapters, and the Restoration-Specific Details

Restoration work often involves cars the arm adapters were not originally designed for. A Model A frame is narrower than any modern truck. A tri-five Chevy sits differently than a modern Camaro. A pre-war anything is a different problem entirely. When we quote a restoration customer, we spec the base lift with symmetric arms (better for center-loaded classics), we add extra pad height with stackable adapters, and we usually add a set of frame-cradle adapters for unibody cars that lack pinch welds. Rotary and Challenger both offer a full accessory catalog that covers ninety-five percent of what a restoration shop will encounter. The five percent that is not covered, we fabricate at our shop or point the customer toward a specialty adapter maker. An automotive lift for home garage restoration is not a plug-and-play purchase; it is a system, and the arms and adapters are as important as the columns themselves.

Step 7: Making the Final Call

By the time a Dubuque restoration shop owner is done walking through this decision tree, the answer is usually a nine or ten-thousand pound commercial-grade two-post lift, baseplate if ceiling is tight, overhead if it is not, symmetric arms, a rolling jack for wheels-free work, and a set of frame-cradle adapters for classics. Total installed budget lands in the low-to-mid five-figure range depending on freight distance and slab prep. That is a real number, and it is not cheap.
