Step One: What’s Your Real Budget Ceiling?

Every decision tree starts with money, so let’s be honest about it. A basic 2-post lift for home garage suspension work sits at the entry end of the spectrum, while a 4-post home storage lift with rolling jacks and extended height sits considerably higher. If your budget is tight, a 2-post model gets you full underbody access for shocks, control arms, and springs at the lowest cost per job. If you’re also storing a second vehicle or want drive-on convenience without lining up wheels on arms, the 4-post pushes your budget up but adds storage utility you don’t get otherwise.

Don’t forget installation and delivery in that budget line. Home garage installs run differently than commercial shop installs — we’re working in smaller spaces, often next to expensive cars, and taking extra care not to mark up finished floors. That care adds labor time compared to a wide-open commercial bay, and it’s worth budgeting for upfront rather than being surprised later.

Step Two: Bolted Down or Not?

This is a branch point people underestimate. Bolting a 4-post or 2-post automotive lift for home garage use to the concrete gives you a return service call when cables need retorquing or adjusting — it’s part of keeping the lift in sync over years of use. Skip the anchor bolts, and there’s nothing to retorque, but there’s also no fixing cable sync if the lift ever gets moved, because floor irregularities throw the cables out of alignment again almost immediately. Step Four: Ceiling Height and Rise

A standard two-post lift needs enough overhead clearance for the vehicle at full rise plus the post height itself, and a lot of attached garages simply don’t have it. Step Five: Floor Access and Forklift Logistics

Delivery logistics matter more for home garages than most people expect. Most residential sites don’t have a forklift on hand, which means the lift components need to come off the truck and into the garage by hand or with a pallet jack, and that changes both the timeline and the crew size needed.
