Choosing an automotive lift for home garage restoration work is a different shopping problem than picking a lift for weekend oil changes. When we sit down with a restorer in southwest Iowa who has a bare-metal Chevelle on jack stands or a mid-70s pickup mid-teardown, the conversation shifts from convenience to sheet-metal access, weld-gun clearance, and the ability to leave the car parked in the air for weeks at a time. Start With Budget, Not Brand

The first branch of our automotive lift for home garage decision tree is not brand — it is budget. Restoration budgets fall into three tiers we see almost every week. The entry tier lands under thirty-five hundred and typically buys an import 4-post from a big-box name. Those work for storage and casual maintenance, but the columns are thin, the cable pulleys are undersized, and after a few hundred hours of use the locks start to drop unevenly. That is a fine choice if you park a running car on it and pull it down twice a year. It is a poor choice if you plan to weld under it, because deck flex at a locked position pushes your weld gun off the line.

The middle tier sits between forty-five hundred and sixty-five hundred and buys a real Atlas or BendPak with proper cable diameters, thicker column steel, and a warranty that survives a home shop. This is where most serious restorers land. The top tier above seven thousand gets you a Rotary or Challenger commercial 2-post that will outlive the car you build on it. For restoration, we usually steer people to the middle tier for a 4-post, then add a rolling jack for wheels-free access when they need to pull a rear end or drop a subframe.

Ceiling Height Math That Actually Matches Restoration

The number-one measurement mistake we see on an automotive lift for home garage restoration is treating ceiling height like a lift-height number. It is not. It is a stack: floor slab plus lift structure plus vehicle plus a safety cushion. For a typical 4-post rated eight or nine thousand pounds, the top of the crossbeam sits around ninety inches, plus roughly seventy inches of vehicle height for most classic muscle. That is roughly one hundred sixty inches — thirteen feet four inches — before you account for garage door tracks.

Southwest Iowa pole buildings usually come in at twelve or fourteen foot side walls. Twelve foot ceilings limit you to raising a low-profile car to full lock only, which is fine for storage but tight for underbody sheet-metal repair. Fourteen foot ceilings open up real overhead access. Before we order, we ask you to shoot a photo of the ceiling with a tape stretched from slab to lowest overhead obstruction — that includes garage door tracks in the open position, HVAC drops, and lights. We would rather over-measure and pick a shorter lift than send a truck out and discover a door track two inches too low. This is one of the calls our install team makes weekly.

Door Swing and Column Footprint

Door swing kills more restoration lift installs than concrete ever will. A classic Chevelle door opens roughly forty-eight inches wide of hinge. If you set a 2-post column with a standard bay layout, the driver-side door can hit the column with the car centered on the arms. For a restoration lift where you will be climbing in and out constantly — grinding, tack-welding, checking panel gaps — that is a daily headache. We solve it two ways.

First, we measure the widest door swing on any vehicle you plan to work on, then add six inches of finger clearance. That number becomes the minimum drive-through clearance for a 2-post, and it drives which column style you want. Second, if you insist on a 2-post inside a tight bay, we spec a wide-drive-through model, which pushes the columns farther apart and gains you three to five inches of door swing without changing the outer footprint. For a 4-post automotive lift for home garage restoration work, this is easier — the runways sit outside the door line and swing is basically unrestricted. That alone is why we recommend a 4-post to nine out of ten restorers who ask.

2-Post vs 4-Post for Metal Work

Restoration divides on this question. Frame-off work — floor pan replacement, quarter-panel skinning, rocker replacement — wants wheels-free access, which is a 2-post job. But a home shop rarely gets one project. It gets three, in different states, needing to be shuffled. That is a 4-post job, because you can drive off and drive back on without unclamping arms every time.

Our compromise for a serious restorer is a 4-post rated nine or ten thousand pounds with a rolling jack option. The jack sits on the runways, rolls to the axle or pinch weld you need, and lifts the wheels off the deck for suspension, brake, or floor-pan work. It is not as clean as a true 2-post for a full frame-off, but it handles ninety percent of what restoration actually looks like day to day. And you keep the ability to park the car mid-project without unwinding a full 2-post cycle. If you have room for both, buy the 4-post first, add a mid-rise scissor down the road for tire and brake work.

Sheet-Metal Access and Weld Clearance

Welding under a lift is not the same as welding on jack stands. Heat, sparks, and the occasional dropped rod all interact with the lift itself. For a restoration-focused automotive lift for home garage service, we insist on three things. First, ground the car to the lift properly, not through the lift columns — a ground cable straight from your welder to the vehicle body stops stray current from arcing across cable pulleys or slack cable connections. Second, protect any exposed hydraulic hose from grinder sparks with a welding blanket. We have seen one dropped ember eat a pinhole through a hose over six months, and the leak showed up right when the car was at full lock.

Third, on a 4-post, park the car so the section you are welding sits between crossbeams, not directly over one. Crossbeam flex under load is small but real, and if you tack-weld a floor pan with a slight bow you will chase it forever. We tell customers to draw a chalk outline on their runways showing the crossbeam positions, then plan the car placement around the weld zone. Small habits like this separate a hobbyist install from a restoration install that produces straight, repeatable panels.

Long-Term Parking and Lock Position Depth

The reason restorers pick 4-posts over scissors is not price — it is lock depth. On a 4-post, mechanical safety locks click every two to two and a half inches through the full column travel, and once locked the hydraulics are unloaded. You can leave a car at full lock for six months without a hair of drift. On a scissor or mid-rise, the lock detents are coarser, and the hydraulic seal is under load whenever the car is up. That is fine for a day, questionable for a week, and a real problem for a six-month restoration.

The lock spacing matters for another reason: sight lines. If you are running a hood-to-cowl gap check, you want to raise the car incrementally until your eye lines up with the pinch weld or the door edge. Two-inch increments are close enough that you can usually find a lock that puts you at eye level. Coarser increments mean you either stand on a milk crate or squat, both of which get old fast.
