The residential freight problem
A typical two-post lift ships crated on a pallet at about 1,600 to 1,800 pounds. A four-post ships heavier — 2,200 to 2,800 pounds depending on runway length and options. Freight carriers will get that pallet to your driveway but they will not offload it. That means you either have a forklift on-site or you rent one, or the delivery driver will refuse to leave the pallet and you get a redelivery fee.
The Ankeny customer had no forklift access at his home. His residential neighborhood does not allow a Bobcat with pallet forks to be stored on-site, and the nearest rental yard would have charged him a full-day rate for a two-hour offload window. Our workaround: our truck, our forklift, one delivery
The workaround we use for Ankeny and central Iowa deliveries generally is that we bring the lift from our Ames warehouse in our own box truck with our own Bobcat with pallet forks. We offload it in the customer’s driveway or garage, and we do it as part of the install visit — so freight and install collapse into one appointment. That eliminates the residential forklift problem entirely.
The tradeoff is that we can only do this for customers inside our regular service radius — about a 3-hour drive from Ames. Beyond that we ship freight and coordinate offload separately, which usually means the customer rents a forklift for the delivery window. Ankeny is a 40-minute drive from us, so it was straightforward. We rolled up on a Tuesday morning, offloaded the crate, and had the lift installed by end of day.
The install: what an RV shop owner cares about
He wanted a two-post because his primary use case was brake service and undercarriage work on the family pickup. He also wanted enough capacity to handle occasional customer overflow jobs — light trailers, small RVs on tow chassis, and the like. We specced a Rotary SPO12 in 12,000 lb capacity with a symmetric arm layout and standard-height columns. The 12,000 lb capacity gives him headroom for anything up to a small class-B RV, and the symmetric arms are more versatile for the trailer and utility axle work he sometimes does.
Install on the SPO12 in Ankeny took about six hours. Slab was 4.2 inches by core sample, adequate for anchoring. Anchors torqued to spec on the first cycle. Cylinder bleed took an extra 20 minutes because the low-hose routing on the SPO12 has a slightly longer path than the SPO10. First loaded cycle with the customer’s pickup was clean — locks engaged on every stop, cylinder held pressure, safety latches all cycled. He signed the ALI operator training checklist and we were done by mid-afternoon.
First brake service on the new lift
His first paying job on the new lift was a family friend’s minivan needing front pads and rotors. On a two-post frame lift with wheel-free arms, that job runs about 45 minutes if you have the parts on hand. He had been quoting the same job at 2.5 hours when doing it on jack stands at home, mostly because jack-stand setup and tear-down for a rotor job eats an hour by itself. Rotor swap workflow that changed everything
The specific workflow that changed for him was the rotor removal step. On a jack-stand setup you have to fight the caliper bracket bolts with the vehicle at bumper height, then drop the rotor, then re-hoist the caliper by hand. On a wheel-free two-post lift, the vehicle is at chest height, the caliper bracket comes off with a straight torque wrench pull, the rotor slides off, and the new rotor slides on with no back-strain lifting.
He timed the rotor swap step specifically. Jack-stand time to remove and install a single rotor with caliper reassembly: about 22 minutes. Two-post lift time for the same steps: about 8 minutes. Over an eight-corner day — front and rear pads and rotors on two vehicles — that is nearly two hours saved. What went wrong in year one
Two things went wrong. First, at about the four-month mark one of the safety-latch pull cables started to bind at its guide grommet. Not a safety problem — the latches still engaged cleanly on their own — but the release cable was catching on the grommet edge. We shipped a new cable and grommet kit under warranty and he installed it himself in about 15 minutes with our phone guidance. Total downtime: zero, because the lift still worked normally with the sticky release cable — we just fixed it during the next quiet afternoon.
Second, at about the eight-month mark he tried to lift a fully-loaded utility trailer with the tongue jack still down. The tongue jack contacted the floor between the columns before the trailer axle came off the ground. No damage to the lift, but he had to lower the trailer, retract the tongue jack, and try again. Lesson learned: verify tongue-jack clearance before you lift on any trailer, even a light one.
