A vehicle collector on the Iowa-Missouri border bought his first automotive lift for home garage service last year and offered to walk us through his first-year experience — install day, first month of use, seasonal storage cycle through the winter, and first service call at the six-month mark. His fleet is a mix of a modern daily driver, two vintage muscle cars, and a work truck. He wanted a lift primarily to store the seasonal muscle cars on top and keep the daily and truck rolling underneath. He also wanted to be able to do brake work and oil changes on all four. Here’s what he learned about picking, installing, and living with an automotive lift for home garage duty as a first-time owner.

Why he picked a four-post over a two-post

The collector’s primary need was seasonal storage. Two-posts don’t do storage well — they hold the vehicle by its frame or pinch welds, cars aren’t designed to sit stressed on frame rails long-term, and you can’t drive out from underneath without dropping the whole lift back to the floor. Four-post drive-on lifts, on the other hand, hold the vehicle by its tires just like a driveway. Cars are built to sit on their tires forever without complaint. Storage is exactly the job they’re designed for.

He also wanted to do occasional brake work and oil changes on the fleet. Four-post lifts handle brake and oil work reasonably well because you can spin the wheel with a rolling bridge jack raising each axle off the runways. He’d give up the ability to hang the wheels for full suspension work — but he wasn’t doing that kind of job anyway. Match the automotive lift for home garage service to the actual use case and everything else about the decision gets simpler.

Overhead versus baseplate: what actually decided it

On the two-post market, overhead configurations are far more common than baseplate. On the four-post market, overhead versus baseplate as a distinction is different because the geometry doesn’t have the same cross-beam issue between columns. But you still see cable-routing choices vary by model. What decided the exact model for the collector was ceiling height. He had 11 feet clear in the shop, which was tight for an overhead-style four-post with a tall vehicle on top of it. The lower-profile variant let him keep rise height without giving up the ceiling.

Baseplate versus overhead is really more of a two-post question, though. If you’re spec’ing an overhead versus baseplate automotive lift for home garage use, the shorthand is: overhead if you have 12 feet of ceiling and hate cables on the floor, baseplate if you have 10 feet 6 to 11 feet 6 and can tolerate a low-profile cable tray between the columns. His four-post ended up overhead-style but his answer to that same question on a two-post would have been baseplate.

Install day: what went right, what went sideways

Install went smoothly on the mechanical side. Four-post assembly is more time-consuming than two-post because there’s more hardware and more sections to line up, but the columns don’t need concrete anchors on most home-storage four-posts — they anchor with fewer bolts because the load spreads across four points instead of two. Cycle-testing empty and then loaded on install day is standard practice for our crew.

Where things went sideways was the garage door opener. His overhead sectional door had a torsion-spring assembly that hung 8 inches below the ceiling. At full rise with a muscle car loaded, the vehicle roof was clearing the spring by less than an inch of margin. We hadn’t caught it on the site survey because the door was closed during our walk-through. That’s on us to remember for next time. We ended up shortening the rise ceiling by three inches with a stop kit, and that solved the clearance issue. The owner learned to specifically measure with the door open during any future planning conversation.

Loading the muscle cars for the first time

First load-up of a stored vehicle is nerve-wracking for every new home-lift owner without exception. The runways are wider than they look from the driver’s seat, but centering the tires the first few times feels like trying to land an airplane on a carrier. He put down chalk lines and painted marker dots on the runway to give himself alignment reference points. The second time he loaded, it was routine. The third time, he wasn’t even thinking about it anymore.

The stored cars sit on the top level, with the daily and truck rolling underneath as needed for weekly use. Locks click into position at multiple heights — usually every two to two-and-a-half inches on the ladder — so he can pick the height that clears his tallest daily driver and locks the muscle cars just above that. He runs the lock-check every single time he parks anything under a stored car. That habit is non-negotiable on any automotive lift for home garage storage duty, no exceptions ever.

Winter storage cycle: temperature and hydraulic fluid

His shop isn’t heated in the coldest winter months, and the biggest surprise of the first winter was hydraulic-fluid behavior at 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Standard AW-32 hydraulic oil thickens noticeably in cold weather. The pump strains a little, the rise time doubles, and the motor runs longer during each lift cycle. Nothing dangerous, just slower and harder on the pump than in summer.

The fix was a small electric heater in the shop set to hold about 45 degrees during the coldest weeks. If a heater isn’t practical for your setup, some owners switch to a lower-viscosity synthetic hydraulic fluid rated for cold-weather use across a wider temperature range. The muscle cars stayed put on the top level all winter with no drama, and he ran the lift up and down every couple weeks just to keep the seals moving and the fluid circulated.

First service call at month six

Six months in, one of his cables developed a slight fray on the outer strand — visible but not structurally compromised yet. We came out, inspected all four cables carefully with the vehicles down, confirmed only one needed attention, and ordered a full set as a matched replacement. Cables are always replaced as a matched set on four-posts to keep the four corners equal in tension and stretch behavior. We swapped them on the next visit two weeks later.

The lesson he took away: cable inspection twice a year, not once. On a four-post storing heavy vehicles year-round, cables see constant static load without relief. Fraying starts at the sheave contact points and grows outward from there. Catch it early and you replace on your schedule; miss it and you replace on the lift’s schedule, which is always inconvenient. Every automotive lift for home garage storage installation should have a written inspection checklist stuck to the column where you’ll see it.

What he’d do differently if he did it over

Two things, mainly. First, he’d have measured the garage door with the door in the open position, not just closed against the frame. That torsion-spring surprise was avoidable with an extra two minutes of measuring. Second, he’d have spec’d the wide-runway version of his four-post instead of the standard runway. His two muscle cars fit fine on standard runways, but his work truck sits with the tires close to the outside edge of each runway, and he’d rather have another two inches of margin. Wide-runway upgrade is a few hundred bucks at order time and effectively impossible to add after install.

Otherwise, the lift has been the single best shop investment he’s made in years. Storage capacity is doubled, oil changes are easier, brake work is faster, and the muscle cars have never sat on a jack stand since install day last spring. Anyone considering their first automotive lift for home garage service should expect a similar first year: one small surprise, several great weekends, and a shop that feels twice as big as it used to feel before the lift went in.
