When a municipal fleet manager buys an automotive lift for home garage side work, safety is not a nice-to-have — it is the whole point. Fleet folks have watched what happens when a lift is used wrong on a shop floor, and they bring that discipline home. Step 1: Pre-Lift Inspection Is Non-Negotiable

Before any vehicle goes on the lift, every day, walk around it. Check tire pressures (a flat tire changes the weight distribution enough to matter), verify the vehicle is centered fore-and-aft for the arm positions, and confirm the lift’s operating area is clear. Look at the arm-restraint gears: they should be clean of grease and debris, and they should click into engagement audibly when you swing an arm. Check the hydraulic lines for weeping. Look at the safety-lock ladder inside each column: worn or bent locks are a red flag. This pre-lift check takes ninety seconds and it prevents the vast majority of lift accidents. Safety habits are habits, and habits are built at the beginning.

Step 2: Arm Positioning for Suspension and Shock Work

Suspension work means the wheels come off and the control arms swing. That means the vehicle’s weight distribution shifts as parts come off. Position the lift arms on the vehicle’s designated lift points every single time. Modern trucks and SUVs have pinch-weld or frame-rail lift points documented in the owner’s manual; use them. On an older frame vehicle, use the frame rails, not the leaf-spring perches or the differential. When you pull a strut assembly and the front control arm swings free, the vehicle will not rock, wobble, or shift because your arms are on real structural points. This is the biggest safety mistake we see: hobby users positioning the arms on whatever is closest to the wheels. When suspension is disassembled and a corner is unloaded, poor arm placement becomes visible immediately — and it can be catastrophic. Step 3: The Mechanical Safety Lock Ritual

Every ALI Gold-certified two-post lift has mechanical safety locks in each column, spaced every two to three inches through the travel. When you lift a vehicle to working height, you pause, raise a click higher than your working position, release the hydraulic pressure, and let the vehicle settle onto the mechanical safety locks. That is the ritual. Never work under a vehicle that is held up by hydraulic pressure alone. Never. If a hydraulic line fails while a vehicle is under load, the safety locks catch the vehicle. If you skipped the lock engagement, nothing catches the vehicle. Municipal fleet folks do this ritual without thinking; the rest of us need to build the habit. On our Ankeny customer’s install day, we made him lift, engage locks, and release pressure three times before we left. Step 4: Shock Replacement Under Load

Shock replacement is deceptively dangerous. Rear shocks especially, on a truck or SUV, can hold significant preload; when the retaining bolts come out, the shock can extend suddenly, and the axle can drop unexpectedly. Before you disconnect a shock, support the axle or the lower control arm independently. A jack stand under the axle, a rolling jack under the control arm, or a purpose-built spring compressor for strut assemblies. This is standard shop practice; it is also standard home-garage practice, and it saves fingers, hands, and worse. An automotive lift for home garage suspension work needs at least one supplementary support option in the tool kit before the first shock job. Step 5: Watching for Overhead Clearance

Suspension work often involves large components: struts extending upward, springs uncoiling, sway bars swinging out. Your lift’s overhead clearance matters for the tools you use, not just the vehicle. If you have a ten-foot ceiling and a truck at working height, your headroom above the truck’s roof might only be three feet. If you are pulling a strut assembly from a truck with the coilover extended, that assembly needs somewhere to go, and it needs to clear your ceiling and your overhead cable bar (if you have an overhead-configuration two-post). This is one of many reasons we recommend baseplate configuration for home-garage installs with tight ceilings; the entire ceiling stays clear. For our Ankeny customer, whose bay had a full twelve-foot ceiling, overhead was fine. If your automotive lift for home garage bay has less, spec the lift accordingly and think through the largest tool or component you will ever swing overhead.

Step 6: Documentation and Annual Inspection Even at Home

Fleet managers document everything, and they carry that habit home. Every lift, commercial or residential, benefits from a maintenance log: date of install, date of first cycle, dates of oil changes, dates of cable inspections, dates of arm-restraint gear checks, dates of any repair. When we install an automotive lift for home garage service work, we hand the owner a maintenance log book and a schedule. Cable tension check every ninety days. Cylinder weep inspection weekly. Full function test annually. Rotary specifies these intervals in every owner’s manual; most home users never open the manual. The log book is our attempt to make the interval visible.
