Build-out sequencing, and why order matters
The correct order is slab, electrical rough-in, framing, then lift selection right before installation. Backwards is impulse-buy the lift, then try to make the building work around it. The reason sequencing matters is that concrete decisions and electrical decisions have to be made before you know the final footprint of the lift. If you pour a 4-inch slab with no rebar and then decide you want a 12,000-lb two-post, you either sawcut and repour or you drop capacity. Neither is fun.
Start with a rough spec envelope. Are you doing a two-post, a four-post, or both? Are you working on cars, trucks, or heavy pickups? Weekend hobbyists in the Great Lakes region mostly work on personal vehicles in the 5,000 to 7,000-lb range, so a 9,000-lb lift covers the fleet with reserve. Once you have the capacity envelope, the slab spec and electrical spec follow. Then framing and ceiling height. Then, and only then, do you actually place the order on specific hardware. Setting the slab before framing goes up

Rotary and Challenger both spec 4 inches minimum of 3,000 psi concrete for their 9,000 and 10,000-lb two-post lifts. Control joint placement matters too. Do not run a control joint through the column anchor zone. Sketch your lift footprint on paper, hand it to the concrete crew, and mark the anchor zones with paint before the finishers set the joints. If you already poured and the joints are in the wrong spot, we can work around it with epoxy anchors instead of wedge anchors, but wedge on virgin concrete is always the cleaner install.
Electrical and lighting in the same rough-in
Most two-post lifts we sell for home use are single-phase 220V with a NEMA 6-20 or 6-30 plug depending on the motor. That means one 20 or 30-amp two-pole breaker and a run of 10-gauge wire to the column base. Run it in conduit above the slab or in-floor if you are pouring fresh. Do not use romex through masonry. While the electrician is on-site, add two more 220V outlets somewhere in the shop for a welder and a compressor, and put the LED shop lights on their own 20-amp 120V circuit so the lights do not flicker when the compressor kicks on.
Lighting position matters for a hobbyist automotive lift for home garage setup. Put LED strips on the ceiling parallel to the lift, not perpendicular. Perpendicular strips shadow the underside of the vehicle when you raise it. Parallel strips light the whole underside evenly. Add a low-voltage LED strip on the underside of the crossbar or between the columns for close-up work. Both work. The bridge-jack combo is more versatile because it doubles as a wheels-free jack for brake work.
Clearance for transmission work is set by the total height of the trans and jack stack. Plan on the transmission jack cup starting at 3 feet from the floor and needing to travel up another 2 feet to meet the trans mounting points on a mid-size vehicle. That means your lift needs to raise the vehicle so the pan is at least 5 feet off the floor. Every four-post at 8 or 9,000-lb capacity gets you there comfortably. Two-posts get you higher, which is nicer for exhaust work but not required for transmissions.
Hobbyist tool budget beyond the lift
The lift itself is the anchor purchase but not the only line item. Plan a hobbyist tool budget for a transmission jack, a set of jack stands as a backup safety, an air line kit if you have shop air, wheel chocks, and a proper torque wrench for the anchor torque check. If you are going four-post, add the rolling bridge jack and a set of caster wheels for moving the lift if you ever need to. For two-post, add tall stackable pads for trucks and a set of frame pinch-weld pucks.
