For CV axle and half-shaft work, the answer is nearly always two-post. A four-post carries the wheels — CV work needs the wheels off — so the four-post becomes a very expensive rolling jack stand for this job. That said, we still install four-posts for foreman customers who want storage as the primary function and treat wrench work as a bonus. In those cases, we sell a rolling bridge jack that lifts the vehicle off the runways enough to remove tires, but the workflow is slower and less comfortable than a real two-post.

The compromise pattern we see most often in central Iowa is a two-post for the wrench bay and a four-post out in the storage bay of a 40-foot pole building. Two lifts, two functions, and each is right for its job. If the budget only supports one, and the foreman does CV work more than once a season, buy the two-post. If the foreman does CV work twice in a lifetime and stores a classic car all winter, buy the four-post.
