Picking an automotive lift for home garage restoration duty along the Iowa-Nebraska border comes down to a decision tree we run in our heads on every phone call. First Fork: Budget Bracket for Your Automotive Lift for Home Garage
The first fork on the tree is money. In the entry-level range, you’re in used-lift territory or entry-level scissor territory, and neither is a great answer for wheel-bearing restoration work. In the low-mid range, you’re looking at a new 9,000-pound four-post from a mid-tier brand, or a used commercial two-post with new cables. In the mid range you’re in new ALI Gold two-post country from Rotary, Challenger, or BendPak – this is the sweet spot for a restoration bay. Above that you’re spec’ing extended height, dual-piston cylinders, or heavy-duty capacity, and you’re future-proofing. When we quote an automotive lift for home garage restoration duty, we want to know your absolute ceiling before we recommend the brand, because we won’t push a customer into a lift that’s going to strain the shop budget for a feature they don’t need. Set the bracket, then let us map the options within it. The tree only works if the trunk is honest.
Second Fork: How Much Concrete Do You Actually Have?
Second fork is your slab. If you know for certain you have 4.25 inches of 4,000 PSI concrete or better with reinforcement, you’re free to pick any lift in the ALI directory. If you know you have less than four inches or no reinforcement, you’re either pouring column pads or picking a four-post that doesn’t rely on floor anchors for its full load. If you don’t know what you have, drill a small core sample or ask the shop’s builder. In border-country pole buildings, we’ve seen everything from three-inch shed slabs to six-inch reinforced slabs poured for grain equipment. The lift branches diverge sharply at this fork. A two-post with a wet 8,000-pound truck on it pulls hard on anchor bolts, and the slab has to hold. A four-post distributes load across the runways and is more forgiving. On any automotive lift for home garage restoration decision, we ask about the slab before we ask about the car. That’s how important it is to get this fork right.
Third Fork: Rebar or No Rebar Under That Slab
Third fork sounds nerdy but it’s real. Rebar or wire mesh in the slab is what keeps the concrete from spider-cracking under column load. If your slab has neither, the concrete can still be strong in compression but weak in tension, and lift columns pull outward at the base under load. That’s tension, and it’s exactly what unreinforced concrete fails at. If your restoration shop slab has no reinforcement, we still install two-posts on saw-cut, reinforced column pads. That’s a couple hundred bucks in concrete work per column and it converts a marginal slab into a bulletproof one. If your slab has rebar on 18-inch centers, you’re golden for any ALI Gold lift up through 12,000 pounds. If it has just wire mesh – the light kind that sags into the middle of the pour – treat it as unreinforced for lift purposes. Ask us to look at photos of the slab if you’re not sure. In border-country farm shops, this is the fork that saves guys from a bad first year of ownership.
Fourth Fork: Two-Post or Four-Post for Wheel Bearing Work
Fourth fork is the big one: two-post or four-post. For wheel-bearing service specifically, a two-post is better because both wheels come off the ground unloaded and you can spin the hub freely. Four-posts hold the vehicle by the tires, and a rolling jack on the runways lets you lift one wheel off at a time but with less clearance. If wheel bearings are 80 percent of your work, buy a two-post. If wheel bearings are 20 percent and you also want overnight storage of a project car, buy a four-post with a rolling jack. If it’s 50/50, our default recommendation is still a two-post with a small mid-rise scissor as a second bay eventually. Border-country restoration shops we’ve built out – Sioux City and Council Bluffs both – usually end up with a two-post first because the wrench work drives the buying decision. Fifth Fork: Column Height Against Your Restoration Ceiling
Fifth fork is ceiling. Look up in your shop right now. If you see less than 11 feet of clear height above the intended lift bay, you cannot run a standard two-post. That’s a hard number. Below 11, you’re in low-ceiling two-post territory (rare) or scissor territory. From 11 to 12, standard columns fit. Above 12, you can add extensions. Column height matters because you want to walk under the car standing up, not stooping. Restoration work involves a lot of overhead – cutting, welding, undercoating, spraying – and every inch of clearance you lose off the ceiling makes the work harder. Sixth Fork: Rolling Jack, Ramps, and the Extras
Sixth fork covers everything after the base lift. Rolling jack: yes if you’re on a four-post, essential if you’ll do wheel work. Aluminum ramps: yes if you’re on a four-post with lowered vehicles. Drip trays: yes on any four-post used for storage. Adapter blocks: yes on any two-post – stack them for pickups. Casters: only if you honestly need mobility, otherwise skip them. Extended arms: only if your longest vehicle exceeds standard reach. Alignment turntables: skip for restoration, buy them if you’re also doing alignments. Air lock kits: yes on four-posts, upgrade money well spent. Each of these adds a modest amount, and the whole package matters less than getting the base lift right. But the wrong base lift with all the extras is still the wrong lift, and the right base lift bare-bones can grow over time.
