Most modern two-post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000-pound range run on 220V single-phase power. Most four-post lifts split – some run on 110V, some on 220V – depending on model and motor size. A 220V circuit in a home garage is the same voltage your electric dryer or your welder uses. It is not exotic and it is not expensive to install. When you’re looking at an automotive lift for home garage tire and general maintenance use, the 220V circuit is almost always the right answer, and it powers the lift with room to spare. Some smaller mid-rise scissor lifts run on 110V and can plug into a standard outlet, but they trade power for convenience. If you’re on the fence between a 110V scissor and a 220V two-post, spend the electrical money and go 220V – the lift will be faster, quieter, and last longer. Circuit Amperage and Wire Gauge
A 220V circuit for a two-post lift is typically 30-amp, on a double-pole breaker. That translates to 10-gauge copper wire from the breaker to the disconnect, and then 10-gauge from the disconnect to the lift power unit. If your run is over 50 feet, drop down to 8-gauge to compensate for voltage drop. This is basic electrical code, and any licensed electrician in southeast Iowa can handle it in a couple hours. Do not run a lift on a 15-amp or 20-amp circuit – you’ll trip breakers on every second cycle, and eventually you’ll pop the breaker at the wrong moment. Four-post lifts often run on smaller motors and can use 20-amp 220V or even 15-amp 220V, but check the spec sheet. If the amperage draw is listed as 15, you can wire the circuit at 20 for headroom and be safe. If the amperage is listed as 20 or higher, use 30. Give yourself the margin.
