A first-time home garage buyer in Waukee called us about an automotive lift for home garage transmission work — his brother-in-law had just moved to the metro and they’d decided to split ownership on a lift they’d both use for family vehicles. Neither had bought one before. The garage was a newer attached three-car with a concrete slab of unknown age. The car list was a mix of crossovers, sedans, and one lifted pickup. This is the setup guide we walked them through, focused on the concrete question first because everything else depends on it.

The Waukee garage — what we measured
The garage was a builder-standard attached three-car, mid-2010s vintage, twenty-two by thirty-two, with a nine-foot ceiling at the drywall and about ten-and-a-half feet to the truss. The floor sloped gently toward the door, which is standard on residential builds for water runoff and which does affect lift installation. The ceiling height was the first constraint — a standard two-post lift wants eleven-plus feet, so a two-post was out unless we used a short-post version. A four-post home garage lift with an eight-foot rise fit comfortably. That decision made itself. From there, the concrete question and the transmission question drove the rest of the spec. Note the sequence: measure first, decide lift style second, then worry about capacity, arms, and accessories. Buyers who jump straight to “which brand” end up buying a lift that doesn’t fit their room. We don’t let that happen if we can help it.
Concrete slab thickness — the number you want
For an automotive lift for home garage duty, concrete thickness matters more than any other single number. A four-post lift on baseplates wants four inches minimum. A two-post lift with anchor bolts wants four inches minimum but ideally four-and-a-half to five, because the anchor pulls straight up under load rather than bearing down. Newer attached garages typically pour four inches of concrete over compacted fill with a wire mesh or fiber blend. That is enough for a four-post. For a two-post in a residential attached garage, we usually core-sample or ask for the original pour spec if the builder documentation is available. If the number comes back at three-and-a-half, we don’t install a two-post there without a section saw-cut and re-poured to six inches with rebar tied in. That’s the honest answer, and it’s saved buyers from installs that would have failed under load.
Rebar and mesh — what actually matters
Rebar and mesh in the slab distribute the load and resist cracking under the anchor. For a two-post anchor, the rebar or mesh directly under the baseplate area is doing meaningful work. For a four-post lift, the baseplate spreads the load across a bigger footprint and the rebar contribution is less critical. What matters more than “rebar vs mesh” is the concrete PSI rating. Residential builders often pour 3,000 PSI concrete. Lift manufacturers spec 3,000 PSI or better in their install manuals. Newer pours meet that spec easily. Older residential pours from the 60s and 70s can come in weaker. If the builder documentation on your Waukee-area home is available, look for the concrete spec sheet. If not, we can core-sample and lab-test. Do this before you order the lift. It’s the single most-preventable install headache we see on an automotive lift for home garage build.
When we say “add concrete” and when we don’t
We say “add concrete” when: the existing slab is under four inches thick, the concrete tests below 3,000 PSI, or the anchor location falls within twelve inches of a control joint or edge. Any of those three is a fail. The fix is a saw-cut section of the slab, dig out to six inches, tie rebar into the surrounding slab with drilled dowels, and re-pour at 4,000 PSI or better. A concrete crew can do this in a day for a few hundred to a couple thousand depending on the size of the section. It sounds expensive until you weigh it against buying a lift that shouldn’t be anchored to that slab. On the Waukee build, the concrete tested fine and no section replacement was needed. On maybe a third of our residential installs, we do end up recommending a section replacement. It’s real work, but real work worth doing.
Transmission service — why a 4-post can still work
The Waukee buyers wanted to do transmission work. Every first-time buyer assumes transmission work means two-post. It doesn’t. A four-post with a rolling bridge jack does transmission drops just as well, the only difference being that you’re positioning the jack instead of dropping the case free onto a trans jack under an open bay. For monthly or less-frequent transmission work, four-post plus rolling jack is the smarter home garage buy — you get storage, an easier install on residential concrete, and better safety margins on a ceiling that’s tight. For weekly transmission work, buy the two-post. For these two brothers-in-law splitting ownership, four-post with rolling jack was the obvious call. They store cars for each other on the top, use the rolling jack for the occasional trans drop, and nobody has to renegotiate garage geometry. That’s the point of a good spec — matching the tool to the work.
What a first-time buyer typically overlooks
First-time buyers overlook three things almost every time. Ceiling height for the lifted vehicle, not just the lift. A twenty-foot van on a four-post at full rise can hit an eight-foot ceiling. Bay width for driving in with the doors open — arms and posts eat into that width. And electrical distance from the panel — a long wire run needs a bigger gauge, which is not something you can fix after the fact without pulling wire. We add all three to our pre-install checklist so nobody discovers them the morning of install day. On the Waukee build, we caught a ceiling issue for the lifted pickup and adjusted the lock-position spec to keep the truck below the truss even at max rise.
