The two dominant two-post designs on the market are overhead and baseplate, and the difference sits in how the hydraulic and equalizer lines route between the columns. An overhead lift ties the columns together with a crossbar at the top, roughly ten to twelve feet in the air on most models, and runs the hoses and cables through that upper crossbar. A baseplate lift, sometimes called a floorplate design, connects the columns at the floor with a low steel plate you drive over as you pull into the bay.

Both styles are safe when installed correctly on the right slab and cured to spec. The trade-off is what each style asks of your building. Overhead needs vertical room. Baseplate needs floor clearance and does not allow the same clean full-swing of a hood or an open trunk lid while the vehicle is in the air. People often ask us if a two-post is all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up, with nothing in between. It is not. A properly built two-post has safety locks stepped every two to two and a half inches up the column travel, which means you can set the working height for the vehicle you are on and the job you are doing. That matters more at home than most people expect, because your back is the only back you have, and you should not be crouching all afternoon.

Standing brake or wheel work sits at one height. Transmission and exhaust access sits higher. A short technician working on a Wrangler wants a different lock position than a six-foot-four technician working on a low sports car.
