Site survey day is where most automotive lift for home garage projects live or die. If the ceiling, floor, and bay layout aren’t verified before delivery, you end up with a pallet in the driveway and a phone call to the installer that starts with “about that ceiling number I gave you.” We’re Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and this is a first-year story on a four-post lift we installed for a car collector in Waukee — a guy with a rotating stable of six vehicles and a genuine need for vertical storage. He asked us early about the site survey process, so we walked it with him step by step. This article walks it with you.

The customer and the shop

Six vehicles, three-car garage. That math does not work without a lift. Our Waukee collector had two daily drivers, a summer sports car, a winter beater, a project car in the middle of a slow restoration, and a trailer for the summer car. The trailer stored outside; that still left five vehicles for three stalls. The plan was to put an automotive lift for home garage duty into the middle stall, stack two of the less-driven vehicles vertically, and keep the daily drivers on the floor of the outer stalls.

He’d been researching lifts for a year before he called us, and he had the right questions ready. Ceiling was 11 feet 4 inches to the drywall, but the garage door track hung down to 10 feet 6 inches, and there was a light fixture at 10 feet 2 inches on the wall side of the door. Slab was original to the 15-year-old build, nominal four-inch pour, probably rebar-reinforced but not confirmed. He wanted us to verify before we drilled. That kind of homework makes an automotive lift for home garage install go smoothly.

Site survey: what we measure and why

A proper site survey has five stops. Ceiling height to every obstruction, not just the peak. Floor slab thickness verified with a rebar detection meter at each anchor location. Bay width and depth confirmed against the lift footprint plus arm swing and drive-on runway extension. Access path from truck to bay (garage door width, doorway height, turning radius). Power outlet location and existing circuit spec.

We did all five in about an hour at our Waukee customer’s shop. Ceiling checked out with the lowest point being the wall-side light fixture at 10 feet 2 inches, which was still clear of a standard-rise four-post at full extension with the stored vehicle’s roof. Slab verified at 4.2 inches with what appeared to be #4 rebar in a 16-inch on-center pattern. Bay width was 12 feet 4 inches, plenty for the four-post columns. Access path was fine (standard 9-foot garage door). Power outlet was a NEMA 6-30 already installed on the middle-stall wall, on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. He was ready to go. Anchor pattern and torque procedure

A four-post lift has four column baseplates, each with four or six anchor holes depending on model. On the Challenger and Rotary four-posts we sell, the anchors are 3/4-inch wedge anchors torqued to a manufacturer-specified value (typically in the 110 to 150 ft-lb range depending on model). Concrete has to hold the anchor without cracking around the shell, and the torque has to reach the spec without stripping.

The anchor procedure is simple if the concrete cooperates. Drill each hole to the specified depth and diameter, vacuum the dust out, seat the anchor by driving it in until the shell is flush, and torque to spec. On our Waukee install every anchor hit spec cleanly. If one had stripped or shown signs of cracking around the hole, we would have moved that anchor an inch and retried, or in a worse case cut and re-poured a small anchor pad before proceeding. Every automotive lift for home garage install has a small chance of an anchor problem, and every professional installer has a plan for it. Ask what that plan is before you sign the install contract.

The first year of ownership: storage plus service

Twelve months in, our Waukee customer has cycled his lift a couple hundred times. The winter beater sits on the lift from November through March. The summer sports car sits on the lift from November through April, then swaps with the beater. The project car spends most of its time in the middle stall on the ground, with occasional overhead stints on the lift when the daily driver underneath needs the stall for a maintenance job.

What he did not anticipate: how much easier the four-post made routine service on his daily drivers too. Wheel bearing service on the summer sports car came up in month nine — front-wheel bearing groaning at 60,000 miles — and instead of pulling the car to a shop, he raised it on the lift, hit the wheel-off working height with the rolling jack, and did the bearing at home in an afternoon. That was the first big service job his automotive lift for home garage installation enabled beyond simple storage, and it changed his mental model of the lift’s value.

Wheel bearing service on a four-post: how the geometry works

Wheel bearings on a modern car live inside a hub assembly that bolts to the knuckle. Replacing them requires wheels off, brake caliper off, rotor off, and then the hub itself unbolted and pulled with a slide hammer or a bearing press. On a two-post lift you’d just lift the car; on a four-post you lift the car onto the runways, then use a rolling jack under the frame or the subframe to lift one axle off the runway so the wheel spins freely.

The rolling jack turns a four-post from a storage lift into a service lift for wheel-off jobs. Our Waukee customer bought his rolling jack as part of the original package, which is what we recommend for every four-post automotive lift for home garage build. The jack lives on the runways between uses, adds no floor footprint, and turns brake pads, wheel bearings, and tire rotations into simple jobs. Storage discipline: what a year of use teaches

Storing a vehicle on a lift is easy in principle and disciplined in practice. The habits our Waukee customer developed over the first year: park with the parking brake set even on the lift, lower onto the mechanical safeties every time before walking away (never leave the lift on hydraulic pressure), check the tire pressures monthly on the stored vehicle so the tires do not deform, and walk around the lift columns once a week looking for oil weeping from the hydraulic connections.

He also learned to keep the stored vehicle centered on the runways side-to-side, because a rear-parked vehicle whose weight is biased to one side (say, a full fuel tank on one corner) will make the lift descend slightly unevenly if the seals ever start to weep. Centering the load extends seal life and keeps the equalizer cables happy. None of this is dramatic. All of it makes an automotive lift for home garage service a decades-long asset instead of a five-year purchase.

Where to start if you’re planning your own build

Start with the site survey. If you can, do the ceiling, floor, and bay measurements yourself with a tape and a flashlight and email them to us. If you can’t verify the floor slab, tell us and we’ll bring the rebar meter on install day (or on a pre-install visit if your site is close enough to Ames). Get the electrical circuit installed by a licensed electrician at least a week before delivery. Confirm the access path from where the truck can park to where the lift will live.
