A mobile mechanic working along the Iowa-Missouri border called us about an automotive lift for home garage installation because his van-based service had grown to the point where he was doing three or four annual state safety inspections a week, and the only way to do those right was in a proper bay with a lift, not on ramps or a floor jack in a driveway. This is the actual story of that install, the surprises we ran into on his four-inch slab, and the cylinder seal question that came back around two years later. The Customer and the Job
Our customer runs a mobile-mechanic business in a small town near the border. He built a 30-by-40 pole shed with a 12-foot sidewall for equipment and long-block storage, and needed one bay set up as a proper inspection lane. State inspection work needs the vehicle in the air so you can eyeball tie rods, ball joints, brake lines, and exhaust hangers — jobs that eat time on jack stands. His question wasn’t “do I need an automotive lift for home garage duty” — he’d already made that call. His question was which one, and whether his slab would hold it.
His weight target was under 7,000 pounds. He wanted to store a car on the lift and potentially park a second vehicle underneath during the workday. That combination — inspection work plus overnight storage — steered us toward a four-post, specifically a 9,000-lb four-post with a bolt-on rolling jack. Two-post would have been cheaper but wouldn’t have solved the storage half of the equation.
Site Survey: Why We Didn’t Trust the Quoted Slab
His pole shed had a nominal four-inch slab. That’s technically enough for the four-post we spec’d, but we asked to see it in person before committing. Two things came up. First, the slab at the door edge was closer to 3.25 inches — normal for pole-shed construction where the concrete crew pulls the edge slightly. Second, there was a control joint running exactly where the front runway posts wanted to sit. If we’d anchored a two-post into that joint, we’d have been chasing anchor pullout inside of a year.
The four-post solved both problems because it doesn’t need slab anchors at all. It sets on rubber pads under each column and stays put through friction and weight. We laid out the lift on his floor with chalk before the truck ever arrived, verified the runways cleared his roll-up door swing, and confirmed his 12-foot sidewalls gave him more than enough overhead for a mid-size sedan five feet in the air. The Install and the Hydraulic System
Install took our two-person crew about six hours from truck-drop to first cycle. The hydraulic power unit is a single-cylinder design on this class of four-post, with the cylinder mounted horizontally under one runway and steel cables translating that stroke into the four column travels. This is important context for the parts question that came later. The cables are the wear item everyone thinks about, but the cylinder seals are the wear item that eventually shows up too, especially in a shop that gets used every single day.
We filled with AW32 hydraulic oil (any decent shop supply, don’t overthink it), bled the cylinder at the highest lock position, and cycled the lift through its full travel a dozen times empty and then loaded. We check every lock position engages cleanly. His locks spacing was about every 2.5 inches, giving him plenty of height flexibility for both storage and work.
Two Years Later: The Cylinder Seal Call
Almost exactly two years after install, he called about a small oil weep at the base of the cylinder rod. This is the exact call our aftermarket parts business exists for. On a lift used four to five days a week by a working mechanic, the primary rod seal will eventually pass a few drops of oil past. It’s not a failure; it’s expected wear. The question is whether you can get the rebuild kit locally without waiting six weeks for something to ship from overseas.
We had his kit in stock. Rebuild took him about an hour on a Saturday morning: pull the cylinder, replace the rod seal, wiper, and O-rings from the kit, reassemble, refill, cycle. This is the difference between an automotive lift for home garage that you own for 15 years and one that becomes scrap in five. Buy from a supplier that stocks rebuild kits and you skip the dumpster path.
What This Case Study Teaches About Buying
Three lessons from this install matter for anyone shopping an automotive lift for home garage duty. First, verify slab thickness with a real measurement before you buy, not by trusting what the concrete contractor’s invoice said. Second, if your slab is marginal or has a control joint in the wrong place, a four-post sidesteps the anchor question entirely. Third, ask before you buy whether the manufacturer’s cylinder rebuild kits are in stock at your distributor, or whether you’re going to be at the mercy of overseas shipping when a seal weeps.

State Inspection Workflow Once the Lift Was In
Once he had the lift running, his state inspection workflow tightened up dramatically. Vehicle drives up onto the runways, he chocks the rear, sets the parking brake, raises to his standard eye-level lock. From there he does the underbody walk: brake lines, exhaust, hangers, ball joints, tie rods, boots, driveline. Rolling jack under one axle if he needs to spin a wheel. Total in-air time on a clean vehicle is 15 to 20 minutes.
Before the lift, the same job took 40 minutes because he was crawling on a creeper with a work light. The lift paid for itself before the first cylinder rebuild.
What We’d Do Differently
Honestly, not much. If we had to redo his install, we’d probably spec the slightly wider four-post model to give him more runway width for the occasional 3/4-ton pickup a friend brings by. We’d also pre-position the rolling jack from day one instead of adding it later — it’s cheaper as an included accessory than as an aftermarket add. Beyond that, this was a textbook automotive lift for home garage install and it’s still running strong.
