An automotive lift for home garage that will let you actually pull an oil pan or a transmission is a dimensions problem before it is a budget problem. Buyers in Davenport and across eastern Iowa ask us all the time whether their 24×28 attached garage or 30×40 pole shop will actually clear a car in the air with room to work underneath. The answer lives in a set of numbers most sellers refuse to publish. We deal with them every day, including with dealership service managers speccing home lifts for their own techs, so here they are, unvarnished.

Runway length and vehicle wheelbase math

A standard home 4-post has runways in the 158 to 176 inch range. That covers wheelbases from a Miata at 89 inches out through a crew-cab short-bed pickup at 145 inches. If you own or plan to own a crew-cab long-bed or a Sprinter, you need extended runways, usually 178 to 197 inches. The gotcha is the approach ramps: they add about 12 inches to the overall footprint on the drive-on end and 6 inches on the drive-off end when stowed. In a 24-foot-deep garage that leaves you about 21 feet of usable runway length after wall clearance. For an automotive lift for home garage service on a full-size truck, you want at least a 26-foot bay depth to move comfortably. Davenport buyers with older single-stall attached garages usually need the compact runway option or an extended-length pole barn to make it work. We measure the whole bay on the layout visit, not just runway length.

Outside width, drive-through width, and column footprint

Width is where the second surprise lands. A typical home 4-post has an outside width of 110 to 116 inches, a drive-through width of 96 to 100 inches, and column bases of 5 to 6 inches on each side. If your garage bay is 12 feet wide inside (144 inches), you have about 14 to 17 inches of walking room on each side of the lift when it is centered. That is enough. If your bay is 10 feet wide, you are down to 12 inches per side, which is uncomfortable but survivable. Below 10 feet wide, the lift will not fit safely. Two-posts are narrower overall but need drive-through clearance for door swing, which changes the useful math. We keep a laminated card of every model’s width numbers because Davenport garages built before 1970 vary wildly, and eyeballing does not work.

Rise height and what full rise actually gives you

Advertised rise height on a home 4-post is usually 68 to 82 inches measured to the top of the runway. Working height under the vehicle, meaning the distance from your floor to the underside of the oil pan when the lift is fully raised, is typically that number minus about 8 inches for the vehicle’s own ground clearance. So a lift with 74 inches of runway rise gives you about 66 inches of underside clearance. That is not enough to walk fully upright for most adults. If you want walk-under clearance, you need at least 78 inches of rise and preferably 82. This matters more for storage than for service, because service work sits on a rolling stool anyway. For an automotive lift for home garage oil pan work, 68 inches of rise is fine; for engine pulls, you want a portable engine hoist or more rise.

Rise time, motor size, and what fast actually costs

Rise time on a home 4-post ranges from 40 seconds on a beefy 3-horsepower motor to 65 seconds on a 2-horsepower unit. The 40-second lifts run a bigger power unit and a fatter cylinder, and they cost a few hundred dollars more. For occasional home use this is preference, not need. A tech at a dealership service manager’s home garage might cycle a lift a hundred times a week and appreciate the fast unit; a homeowner cycling five times a week will never notice. Motor amp draw is the more useful number: a 2 hp motor pulls about 12 to 15 amps at 220 volts, a 3 hp unit pulls 18 to 22 amps. That drives your breaker size and the wire gauge from your panel to the outlet. Undersize either and your motor overheats and the breaker trips at every lift cycle.

Cylinder specs and why they matter for oil pan work

The hydraulic cylinder is the single most stressed part of any automotive lift for home garage service. On a home 4-post, cylinders are typically 3 to 4 inches in bore diameter, with rod diameters of 1.5 to 1.75 inches and stroke lengths matching the rise height. Those numbers matter because they determine seal size, and seal size determines whether a rebuild kit is available five, ten, or twenty years from now. Rotary, BendPak, Atlas, and Challenger all publish cylinder part numbers openly. Off-brand imports do not, and that is the first tell we look for on a spec sheet. If your automotive lift for home garage use is going to see oil pan gasket work, you will drop the pan enough times that the cylinder cycles a few hundred extra times a year, which is fine on a name-brand unit and problematic on an unbranded one.

Hydraulic cylinder seals and rebuild kits: the numbers to memorize

A cylinder rebuild kit for a mainstream home lift includes rod seals, piston seals, wear bands, wiper seals, and O-rings. The kit for a Rotary SPOA10 or a BendPak XPR-10AS runs in the modest-two-figures range and takes an experienced tech two hours to install. On a home unit cycling five times a week, you will likely never rebuild the cylinder in your first fifteen years of ownership. On a home unit cycling twenty times a week, you might see weep at year eight to ten. Either way, know the part number before you buy. Ask the seller to write it down. Fitting the lift into a real Davenport garage: a spec walk

Last year we walked a Davenport dealership service manager through a spec for his personal home garage. His pole barn was 30×40 with a 12-foot ceiling and 220V single-phase run. We picked a 10K four-post with 172-inch runways, a 3 hp motor, 78-inch rise, and a rolling bridge jack. Total installed cost landed in the mid tier.
