The reason is simple: a lift that cannot be safely wired is a lift that cannot be safely installed. We check total panel capacity, the number of open breaker slots, and the distance from the panel to the intended lift location. A typical home 4-post motor pulls 12 to 22 amps at 220 volts single-phase depending on horsepower, so you need a dedicated 20A or 30A breaker with correspondingly gauged wire. Cable tension, sheaves, and the annual look

A 4-post home lift runs on four steel cables over four to eight sheaves, and cable tension has to stay even across all four corners. If one cable stretches faster than the others, the runway tilts under load. That is the failure mode you never want. Exhaust and driveline work means your head, shoulders, and torso spend real time under the vehicle. This is where automotive lift for home garage buyers get complacent and get hurt. Two rules we drill into every West Des Moines owner: always engage mechanical locks before going under, and never rely on hydraulic hold. Hydraulic seals can drift; the mechanical locks are your parachute. Every time you send the lift up, listen for the lock click at the height you want, then relieve hydraulic pressure and let the locks carry the vehicle. Only then do you go under. The overhead safety bar and full-lock discipline

On 4-post lifts the equivalent discipline is the full-lock check: never lower until you have deliberately released the locks with the handle, and always cycle back through a lock cycle before parking overnight.
