Bay width is the other measurement. A single 10-foot-wide stall is enough for a two-post car lift if you don’t need to swing doors on a dually pickup. For duallies and one-ton trucks, plan on 12 feet or better between adjacent obstacles. Slab Thickness in a Pole Barn
Most two-post lifts need 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and several manufacturers ask for 4.25 inches. Pole-barn slabs poured for general equipment storage are often 4 inches with fiber mesh, which is usually enough for a 10,000-lb two-post but tight for a 12,000-lb model. If your slab was poured thinner, or if it’s older and you don’t have the batch ticket anymore, you have two options: core-drill a plug and test it, or pour a reinforced pad where the two posts will land. We’ve done both in Black Hawk County, and pouring two 6-inch anchor pads is cheaper than replacing the whole floor. Four-post lifts are more forgiving because the load is spread across four base plates instead of two, and customers who aren’t sure of their slab often go four-post for that reason alone.
