A 10,000 lb symmetric two-post ships around 1,800 to 2,100 pounds because the columns are shorter but the crossmember and hydraulic pack are denser. The pallet footprint on both is roughly eight feet long by 30 to 36 inches wide. Freight from our Ames yard to southeast Iowa runs about a day in transit, and we schedule delivery so the truck arrives on a business day when the buyer can be home. Residential deliveries add a $75 to $150 residential surcharge depending on the carrier; plan for it. The single most common freight surprise is that a 53-foot semi trailer cannot always turn into a gravel driveway. Ask about liftgate service if you do not have unloading equipment.

Unloading options: forklift, tractor, or the lift’s own hands

Unloading is where a residential purchase turns into a project. If you have a farm tractor with pallet forks rated at 2,000 pounds or higher, you are fine. Most third-generation family shops in southeast Iowa already have one. If you do not, you have three options: rent a forklift for a half-day (roughly $200 to $350 in most Iowa markets), pay us to bring a forklift on our truck (available in a limited service radius), or unload manually by breaking the crate down and moving components piece by piece. The crate can be disassembled with a cordless impact and a helper. Columns come out one at a time at roughly 350 pounds each, the powerpack is about 90 pounds, arms are 45 to 60 pounds each. Manual unload is slower but it works. An automotive lift for home garage does not require a forklift, but it makes the day easier.

Real column and crossmember dimensions you plan around

Column height on a mainstream 10,000 lb two-post automotive lift for home garage is roughly 11 feet 6 inches for a standard model and 12 feet 4 inches for the tall extension. The overhead crossmember adds another 4 to 6 inches above the column top, which is why the “12-foot ceiling minimum” rule exists. A four-post storage lift has taller columns, often 12 feet to 12.5 feet, because the runways sit at whatever raised height you want. Working on the fluid under a solid-axle truck on jack stands is uncomfortable and slow; the fill plug is often at torque and needs a breaker bar you cannot swing on your back. On a four-post automotive lift for home garage, the truck goes up to shoulder height, you slide a drain pan onto the runway crossmember, and the plug is at eye level with room to swing a 24-inch breaker. What used to be a two-hour job becomes forty minutes. The rolling jack accessory turns the same lift into a suspension platform. Site prep: slab, anchors, and the shim reality

Older slabs, the ones you find in southeast Iowa shops built in the 1970s and 80s, often measure honest, but the rebar is often absent. Cores can be pulled for $150 to $300 through a local concrete contractor if you have any doubt. Anchor bolts are typically three-quarter-inch wedge anchors five or seven inches long, and we use a rotary hammer with a matched carbide bit. Shims come into play on almost every install because no slab is perfectly level. The manufacturer allows a specific stack thickness before the base pads must be re-shimmed. Skimping on shims voids the warranty and creates column lean that gets worse over time. If your slab is more than half an inch out over the column footprint, we sometimes recommend a leveling pour instead.

Electrical requirements to hand your electrician

Most residential two-post lifts run on 220V single-phase, drawing roughly 25 amps at startup and 15 amps under load. A 30-amp breaker on a dedicated circuit is the standard. Some smaller four-posts can run on 110V, but they are slow and we push customers to 220V unless the garage has no way to add a subpanel. Motor rotation direction matters. If the lift powers up and refuses to raise, the electrician swapped two legs and needs to swap them back. Cord length from the powerpack is typically six to eight feet, so plan your outlet within reach or add a whip. Delivery day timeline from truck to first-lift

A typical southeast Iowa install runs a full day from truck arrival to first vehicle raised. Anchor layout takes 30 minutes with a chalk line and the manufacturer template. Drilling anchor holes takes 45 to 60 minutes. Column set and torque takes another hour. Overhead crossmember, hoses, and powerpack take two to three hours. Fluid fill, bleed, and cycle test take an hour. First real vehicle up in mid-afternoon.
