The baseplate itself is typically a low-profile steel bar three to four inches high and eight to ten inches wide, running across the floor between the two columns. That is not a big trip hazard in a shop where the workflow is set up around the lift; it is a bigger hazard in a garage where the family is walking through to get to the freezer on the back wall.

The honest question for a home installation is whether the traffic pattern in the garage crosses between the two columns. If the answer is yes, the baseplate will get bumped by rolling tool carts, floor jacks, and children on scooters, and the lift will lose some of its convenience factor. If the answer is no — if the lift lives in a dedicated bay with wall to the left and the workbench to the right — the baseplate is invisible after the first week. We ask this question directly during the site visit because the answer changes the recommendation. Owners who insist on overhead in a low-ceiling home usually end up compromising somewhere — a shorter column, a lower rise, or a shortened arm swing. That configuration is workable but demands attention to where hands and tools go.

Pinch points are the risk. A lift arm carries the full weight of the vehicle through a shoulder joint that rotates through the arm-restraint mechanism. If a hand goes into the joint while the pump is running, the arm rotates onto it under the full vehicle load. Nobody plans to put a hand in the joint, but under a car in the middle of a job — reaching for a wrench that just dropped — it can happen. The safety habit is to never reach through the arm shoulder, ever, for any reason. Route around it.

It also means twelve-thousand-pound capacity for a home lift that will occasionally see an F-250, rather than the nine-thousand-pound version that is right at capacity for that truck.
