Choosing an automotive lift for home garage use gets complicated fast when the work you plan to do goes beyond oil changes. A mobile mechanic we work with in Waukee called last spring wanting a home base for alignment work — a rig that could hold plumb on a nine-hour rack-and-pinion job without drift, but still tuck into a three-stall garage. The spec sheet decision is not obvious. Here is exactly how we walked him through the comparison, ceiling by ceiling and lock by lock.

The Waukee call: why alignment work changed the shortlist

The customer opened with a clear budget and a clear space — a 30-foot bay in an oversized three-stall garage with plenty of ceiling. He wanted a lift that could run alignments on his own trucks and the occasional side-job passenger car. That single word, alignment, immediately narrowed the field. A basic four-post with drive-on runways works for wheels-loaded suspension work, oil changes, and storage. Alignment, though, wants a flat, level platform with turnplate pockets and slip plates in the back — features some four-post owners bolt on later. A two-post with rolling jacks can also handle alignment, but you are constantly working around the columns and the jack is only rated for pinch-weld and cradle geometry, not for the front-end torque a stubborn control arm bolt puts on a lift.

We spent about forty minutes on the phone unpacking his real workload. He was going to do maybe fifteen alignments a year, plus one or two overnight suspension rebuilds. That is not a full commercial workload, but it is more than most home users. We recommended a four-post with pre-cut turnplate pockets and a set of steel slip plates for the rear, rather than talking him into a full commercial alignment rack. The delta in price between a bare four-post and one with alignment prep is small — a few hundred dollars — but the shop workflow difference is enormous.

Two-post vs four-post for an automotive lift for home garage doing alignment

The classic debate every automotive lift for home garage buyer runs into is symmetrical two-post versus a four-post drive-on. For a garage that will do meaningful alignment work, we lean four-post ninety percent of the time. Alignment lives and dies on plane. Setting a car with rolling jacks on a two-post means the wheels come off the arms, then you have to level again, and the tires have to sit on turnplates at the front and slip plates at the rear. A four-post starts flat, stays flat, and gives you built-in ramps you drive onto in ten seconds. Our four-post install guide walks through this in more depth.

The other half of it is single-car storage. Our Waukee customer wanted the option to park a second vehicle underneath — pretty much the deciding factor. Two-posts leave a vehicle hanging in the middle of your bay; a four-post gives you a driveable second story. On a 12-foot side wall in a three-stall, we can fit almost any 8,000-9,000 lb four-post at full height with the top of a mid-sized truck clearing the underside by a foot. The one case a two-post wins is if you do transmission or exhaust work more than alignment; the arms swing out of the way and you can stand under the whole car without runways in your line of sight. We told him plainly which chores each design handles better.

Model numbers we actually compared side-by-side

We narrowed his automotive lift for home garage decision to three specific four-post models. The first was a Rotary SDO14 — commercial-grade, 14,000 lb, more capacity than he would ever need, but built like an anvil and something he could hand down. Price was the sticking point; it was several thousand above the second option. The second was a BendPak HD-9 series in the extended-length trim, which fits home garages perfectly and has a huge aftermarket for accessories. That one hits a real sweet spot for storage plus service. The third was an Atlas Apex, a value option we occasionally stock, cheaper but with thinner steel and shorter warranty coverage.

For alignment prep specifically, the HD-9AF and the Rotary both offer turnplate pockets from the factory. The Atlas requires you to cut them yourself or drop a set of aftermarket plates on top of the runway — workable, but not a first-day feature. We walked him through the actual spec sheets: runway length, drive-through width, height clearance, and column footprint. The BendPak came out best on total value, the Rotary best on longevity, and the Atlas best if he only needed alignment prep once a year. His decision landed on the BendPak because he could afford the extra rolling jacks and slip plates immediately with the money he saved, rather than buying a bare Rotary and doing without accessories.

Ceiling height, floor thickness, and door swing in a three-stall

A three-stall garage in central Iowa usually means a 12-foot side wall with either a scissor truss or an attic truss overhead. Peak height at the ridge can be 14 or 15 feet, but the side you set the lift on is what matters. Our Waukee customer had a fully engineered pole-barn style building — 12-foot side walls confirmed and a poured 5-inch slab with rebar. That is plenty of concrete for any residential four-post; we prefer 4 inches minimum at 3,000 PSI and we like 5 with rebar for peace of mind.

The overhead-limit switch on the BendPak trips at about 141 inches. That put the top of a lifted F-150 within an inch of the top of the wall studs, which is comfortable — a Tahoe with a roof rack would have been tight. We also measured his overhead door tracks; some tracks intrude into the ceiling plane by 6-8 inches and can catch a raised roof line on the way up. His door was a low-profile track, so we were clear. Column footprint on this model is about 121 inches wide. Set against his 12-foot bay wall, that left him roughly 20 inches on either side to walk around the columns, get a jack in, and swing an impact. Any tighter and we would have suggested a wider footprint model or moved the lift a bay over.

Adjustable lock spacing: what those two-inch clicks really buy you

A question we get on almost every automotive lift for home garage sale is whether the lift is fixed at all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down. It is not. Every quality four-post has locks positioned roughly every two to two-and-a-half inches through the column travel. That means you set the height for the job you are doing — chest height for engine work, standing-underneath height for transmission drops, waist height for oil changes, and low height for parking underneath. Alignment specifically wants a comfortable working height that lets you see the turnplates without stooping; most techs park it at about mid-height and let the front wheels come to their eye line.

The lock spacing matters most for pair-work. On a good four-post, all four locks click into place at the same height, so you never have to eyeball whether the lift is level. Our Waukee install used a lift with electric-over-hydraulic column syncing plus mechanical safety locks, which is the standard on any commercial-grade home unit today. The locks are what carry the load, not the hydraulics — hydraulics only get you between locks. If a hose ever bursts, the lift descends to the next lock position and stops. That safety story is why we would never recommend a lift without positive lock engagement, no matter how cheap.

Delivery, install, and the first alignment on the new lift

We delivered the automotive lift for home garage to his shop on a Tuesday and had it running by Thursday afternoon. The install is more work than most people expect but not overwhelming — two experienced installers, one day of setup plus a second day for the electrical run and first-motion test. Concrete anchors go in first: we drilled the pattern per the manufacturer template, blew out the holes, and set the wedge anchors with the correct torque. Getting the columns plumb is the fussy step; even a quarter-inch out of plumb over 12 feet of column can bind the cables when the lift is loaded.

Cables are threaded next, then the runways lifted into place with a small crane truck we bring. Once the top plates are on and locks are engaged, we cycle the lift dry — no vehicle — up and down twenty times to seat the sheaves and check equalization. Then we drove his own truck on for the first live cycle. That first alignment ran the next weekend. He called us Monday to tell us the turnplates were reading cleanly and the slip plates gave him the caster sweep he needed. A first-alignment call after install is the check we care about — anyone can lift a vehicle, but keeping the plane true across four columns is where cheap lifts eventually give up.

What we would spec differently if he called again

Looking back a year later, a couple of things would have made his automotive lift for home garage setup even better. First, we would have quoted him the drive-over ramp add-on at time of order rather than as an afterthought. Once you get used to driving on a four-post, you realize the front approach ramps are the part you interact with most, and the drive-over ramps are the ones you kick out of the way when parking a second car underneath. Ordering both up front is a small delta and saves a return trip.

Second, we would have suggested a bolt-on air-line kit. He ends up dragging a shop hose across the floor for impact work; a proper air-line manifold on the column runs about the price of a decent impact and makes any wheel work faster. Third, and this is philosophical, we would have pointed him harder at the Rotary. He is doing more work on his own vehicles than he expected — the mobile side of his mechanic business has grown, and the lift is running four days a week instead of one. The BendPak is holding up, but a Rotary in the same spot would be there in twenty years without a squeak. That is the conversation we now have earlier with every buyer whose workload might grow.
