Most people shopping for an automotive lift for home garage assume they’re ordering something roughly the size of a large appliance. In reality, a two-post lift rated for 9,000 to 10,000 pounds ships in multiple crates totaling somewhere between 1,200 and 1,800 pounds, and a four-post storage lift in the 8,000 to 9,000 pound capacity range can run even heavier once you count runways, ramps, and the crossmember. That’s the freight weight for the lift itself, not the vehicle it will eventually hold.

We’ve had home garage customers who assumed they could unload the crates with a couple of friends and a hand truck, and it’s simply not realistic for anything beyond the smallest components like arm assemblies or hydraulic packs. The main columns and runways on a four-post, in particular, are long, awkward, and dense — a single runway section can weigh 300 to 500 pounds on its own, and there’s no good grip point for manual lifting.

Forklift Access: The Detail Everyone Forgets

We ask every automotive lift for home garage customer the same question before we schedule delivery: can a forklift actually get to your unloading point? We always ask about slab age, thickness, and whether there’s any visible cracking near the intended anchor points before finalizing a quote.

For a family-owned garage that’s been doing general daily maintenance for decades, floor condition is rarely a surprise — they know their building. But for homeowners pouring a brand-new pole building or garage specifically to house a lift, we recommend building to the higher spec from the start rather than retrofitting later. It costs less to get the slab right the first time than to core-drill new anchor points after a failed pull test.

The Installation Day Sequence

Once freight and forklift access are sorted, installation of an automotive lift for home garage typically runs a full day for a two-post configuration and closer to a day and a half for a four-post, depending on runway assembly and leveling. Our crews unload with the forklift, stage components in the bay, set and anchor the columns or runways, then run hydraulics, cables, and electrical before testing under load.
