We got asked a specific question last spring by a heavy-duty truck shop owner in the Iowa Great Lakes region: could an automotive lift for home garage duty do alignment work on his personal vehicles? Alignment Work Requires a Level Runway — Not Just Any Lift
Any lift can raise a vehicle. Not every lift can hold that vehicle level enough for alignment gear to read within spec. Alignment machines require the runways to be within 1/8 inch of level across their length, and the turnplates and slip plates have to sit flush at the front and rear. That level-runway requirement disqualifies most two-posters immediately — a two-post supports the vehicle by the frame, not by the wheels, and there’s no runway to level in the first place.
Four-post lifts with proper alignment-cutout runways and factory turnplates are the answer if you want to do alignments at home. Alignment scissor lifts (like the Rotary R544) also work but cost significantly more per bay footprint. Two-post can do wheel work — brakes, tires, bearings — but not alignment because there’s no runway. That was our first honest conversation with him. He’d been assuming he could bolt a two-post in and use it for everything under the sun. We showed him the alignment-cutout drawings on the four-post lifts and he got it in about five minutes.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric: Why It Matters for Alignment
Even setting aside the runway issue, symmetric versus asymmetric configuration matters for the alignment work he wanted to do. Symmetric two-post columns sit straight; asymmetric columns tilt 30 degrees. Symmetric handles longer wheelbase vehicles better because the arms swing farther out. For alignment on a four-post, the equivalent question is: do the runways run parallel and centered, or are they offset for asymmetric door clearance?
Standard four-post alignment lifts use parallel symmetric runways because alignment requires centered wheel positioning against the turnplate pivot. Storage-focused four-post lifts sometimes have narrower or asymmetric runways for space savings, and those won’t hold alignment gear to spec. So even in the four-post category, buyers can pick the wrong sub-type without knowing. If you’re not, save the money.
The Real Cost of Adding Alignment Capability
Here’s where the cost breakdown lives. A basic four-post home-storage lift lands in the $3,500 to $4,500 range for the lift alone with install. A four-post rated for alignment work with proper turnplate and slip-plate cutouts lands in the $6,500 to $8,500 range with install. Add the alignment machine itself — a Hunter setup for casual use — and you’re at $15,000 to $25,000 turnkey. That’s before software subscriptions and calibration.
Our Iowa Great Lakes customer had budgeted $7,500 for the lift only. That was enough for the alignment-ready four-post but not the alignment gear itself, which he planned to add in a year. We told him: buy the alignment-ready lift now, add the machine later. Reversing the order (buy standard lift, upgrade later) doesn’t work — you’d be replacing the lift, not adding to it. Four-Post with Alignment Kit vs Dedicated Alignment Rack
The next question is whether to buy a general four-post with alignment cutouts and turnplates, or a dedicated alignment rack. General four-post with alignment kit does both storage and alignment reasonably well; dedicated alignment rack does alignment perfectly but has no storage utility. Ratings differ too — general four-posts are typically 9,000 to 14,000 lb; dedicated alignment racks are usually 12,000 to 18,000 lb.
For his mixed use (personal storage, personal alignment, occasional 3/4-ton work), general four-post with alignment kit won on both budget and utility. We spec’d him a Rotary AR family alignment-ready four-post rated 14,000 lb. His use case wasn’t extreme — mostly half-ton pickups and SUVs, occasional 3/4-ton, no commercial semi work. Anything heavier and we’d have steered him to a Rotary heavy-duty setup, which is outside home-garage territory anyway. Why We Steered Him Toward a Commercial-Grade Automotive Lift For Home Garage
Home-storage lifts (BendPak HD-9, Atlas 409, etc.) are excellent for storage. They are not great for alignment work. Their runways are lighter, their tolerances looser, and their turnplate cutouts (when even offered) aren’t as precisely machined. Commercial-grade alignment-ready four-posts have thicker runway steel, tighter tolerances, and factory-cut turnplate pockets sized for standard alignment gear from the major brands.
For a customer doing serious alignment work, we always steer them commercial-grade even for home use. The delta is $2,000 to $3,000 over storage-grade. That delta buys accuracy that shows up on every job — better readings, fewer re-checks, longer lift life on the columns and cables. His shop had commercial-grade every other tool; adding a hobby-grade lift would have been the weakest link. Sometimes the answer to “what’s the right home lift?” is “actually, a commercial one.” His automotive lift for home garage ended up being a full commercial rack that just happens to live in his personal barn.
The Add-Ons for Alignment Work That Actually Earn Their Keep
Three add-ons paid for themselves on his rig. Front turnplates (already included in the AR configuration) — non-negotiable for any alignment work. Rear slip plates — necessary for camber and thrust angle readings. Rolling jacks (one pair) — for tire and wheel swaps during alignment prep. Total add-on cost: about $800 above the base lift.
Skip the caster kit, factory light bar, and drip trays for an alignment-primary lift. Casters undo the level runway you paid for. Light bars are worse than shop LEDs at half the price. Drip trays don’t apply to alignment work at all. We watch dealers upsell add-on packages that make sense on a storage lift and are backwards on an alignment lift. Ask, itemize, and skip what doesn’t fit your work. His final add-on package: rear slip plates, one pair of rolling jacks, and an approach ramp upgrade for his lower-slung vehicles.
Final Cost Breakdown and What He Got for the Money
Lift base cost was low-$6,000s. Add rear slip plates, rolling jacks, ramp upgrade — call it $800. Freight and install — call it $1,500. Total turnkey: mid-$8,000s. His alignment machine (deferred to year two) would be an additional $15,000 to $20,000 depending on brand and features. But the lift alone was a firm base for whatever gear he added later.
He signed the order last April and installed in June. He’s done alignments on his own three trucks so far using rented alignment gear (a workaround while he saves for his own machine). No issues with runway level, no issues with turnplate action. The commercial-grade four-post has earned its price already.
