A European-marque specialty shop owner in northern Missouri called us last winter looking for an automotive lift for home garage duty at his second shop — a small barn he was setting up for weekend work on his own BMW and Porsche collection. He came in with a list of what he thought he knew about lifts, most of which was myth. Asymmetric was always better for European cars. Two-post was cheaper to install than four-post. Overhead style was inherently less safe than baseplate. None of that is true, and unwinding the myths took an hour. This article is the myth-busting piece for anyone shopping an automotive lift for home garage who’s heard the same forum-repeated things.

Myth One: Asymmetric Is Always Better for European Cars

Asymmetric two-posts are marketed with European-car photos and captions like “designed for door clearance.” The columns tilt 30 degrees so the doors open past the column instead of into it. For a shop that only lifts short-wheelbase sedans, asymmetric works fine. But asymmetric limits pad reach — front arms are shorter, so long-wheelbase sedans (like most 5-series BMWs, 7-series, Panameras) run out of arm before the pad hits the pinch weld correctly under the frame rail.

Truth: symmetric two-posts, with well-designed door-clearance offsets, handle most European cars just as well and handle everything else better. If your shop only ever lifts short wheelbases (Miata, 3-series, 911), asymmetric is fine. If you might lift anything longer, symmetric with three-stage arms wins. Our northern Missouri customer had a 7-series, an old 928, and a Cayenne in the collection. Asymmetric would have compromised his coverage on the longer cars. Symmetric was clearly the right pick, even for what he called “European work” as an overall category.

Myth Two: Two-Post Is Cheaper to Install Than Four-Post

Sticker price on two-post is usually lower than sticker price on comparable four-post — that’s true and where the confusion starts. Install cost is a different story. Two-post installs require careful anchor placement, precise column alignment, and stronger anchoring because all the load rides on the columns’ bases. Four-post installs are lighter on anchoring because the load spreads across four base plates and the runways brace the columns against each other.

In practice, two-post install labor runs about the same as four-post install labor once you count anchor prep, torquing, plumbing hoses, and commissioning. Sometimes a hair more for two-post because the load-critical anchor pattern demands more precision on the layout. The delta between two-post and four-post total-turnkey isn’t as wide as sticker suggests. Buyers who assume two-post saves them $2,000 installed usually save about $500 to $1,000 depending on config. Not nothing, but not the reason to pick one over the other. Pick based on the work, not the assumed install savings.

Myth Three: Overhead Style Is Less Safe Than Baseplate

Both styles are ALI Gold certified when built by reputable manufacturers, and both share the same core safety systems — mechanical locks every 2 to 3 inches, equalization cables, hydraulic hose overpressure valves. The overhead style adds a crossbar with an integral safety shutoff that stops the lift if a vehicle pops the crossbar (from being too tall). Baseplate style eliminates the crossbar and shifts the equalization hardware to the base and floor cross-tie.

Safety-wise, both configurations have long, documented safety records. Overhead is chosen for taller vehicles and standard ceilings. Baseplate is chosen when ceiling is limited (under 11 feet) or overhead clearance matters for a specific vehicle. Neither is safer than the other in any meaningful sense. What’s less safe is old lifts that haven’t been re-cabled or re-hosed in 15 years, regardless of style. Age and maintenance matter far more than style. Our customer had heard baseplate was “the pro choice” from a forum. It’s a choice, not a safer choice.

Myth Four: You Need 12,000-lb Rating for Any Truck Work

This one shows up in every online lift debate. “Get the 12K just in case.” Reality: 10,000-lb rated commercial two-posts handle everything up through and including 3/4-ton pickups with room to spare. A 3/4-ton pickup weighs 6,500 to 7,500 pounds curb, well below the 10,000-lb rating. Even loaded work trucks max out around 8,000 to 8,500 pounds. Where 12,000-lb rating starts to matter is 1-ton dually trucks, especially with tool boxes and equipment; those can approach 9,500 to 10,000 pounds and the higher rating adds real safety margin.

For our northern Missouri customer, the heaviest vehicle he’d ever lift was his Cayenne (about 5,000 pounds). A 9,000-lb lift would have been fine, but we spec’d 10,000-lb because resale is stronger and the price delta was minimal — maybe $200 to $400. He didn’t need 12K anywhere in his fleet. If you’re doing anything up through 3/4-ton, 10K is plenty of rating. Save the delta and put it toward good arms or add-ons that actually earn their keep on the work you do.

Myth Five: Chinese Lifts Are the Same as Rotary With a Different Sticker

This is the myth we hear most, and it’s the most costly one buyers act on. Some low-end lifts do share manufacturing sources, but the parts inside — steel grade, motor spec, cable, cylinder — vary widely. What separates ALI Gold-certified Rotary or Challenger from an unbranded import is documented steel spec, third-party testing, US-based parts stock, factory-trained installer training, and warranty backing. That’s not marketing spin, that’s paperwork you can verify.

We’ve been called out to fix a lot of imports. Common failures: cable stretch, motor bearing failure, cylinder seal blowout, base plate cracking around anchor holes. Same failures rarely on brand-name lifts, and when they happen, parts are on our shelf ready to ship same-day. On an import, parts often aren’t sourceable at any price, and the lift becomes scrap. The delta between an unbranded import at $2,800 and a Rotary or Challenger at $4,800 to $5,500 is the difference between a 5-year lift and a 25-year lift. It’s not the same equipment with a different sticker.

What Actually Matters for a European-Focused Automotive Lift For Home Garage

Once the myths were done, we walked what actually matters. Pad type — European cars often have pinch welds that crush under standard steel pads, so rubber inserts or frame-cradle adapters matter for daily use. Arm reach — long wheelbase European cars (7-series, Panamera) need three-stage arms to get the pad under the frame at the correct spot. Slow-speed lift capability — European tech work often means precise positioning within an inch, so a lift with slow-lower and fine-height control helps every job.

Also access — European cars are often lower ground clearance than American, so approach ramps or lower-profile pad heights matter. And door clearance — sports coupes have long doors, and getting the door open past the column matters more than for a sedan. Symmetric with the right column spacing usually covers all of this. What He Bought and Why the Myths Didn’t Survive Contact With His Real Work

Final config: Rotary SPO10, 10,000-lb rating, symmetric, three-stage arms, overhead style, standard columns, single-phase 220V. Total investment landed low-$5,000s installed. Add rubber pads and frame-cradle adapter set — another $400 on top. He’s had it about eight months now and has done service on the 7-series twice, the Cayenne once, and the 928 for a top-end rebuild he’d been putting off for years while working on gravel.

None of the myths he’d walked in with survived the actual use of the lift. Asymmetric wouldn’t have reached the 7-series properly. 12K rating would have been overkill for his fleet. Overhead was fine on his ceiling. Buying a well-known brand mattered because he’s the guy who calls with questions and expects real answers.
