Buying an automotive lift for home garage use as a car collector is a very different decision than buying one as a wrencher. We installed a Rotary two-post overhead-style lift last spring for a West Des Moines customer with a small collection of drivers he cycles through the seasons, and twelve months later we sat down with him to write up what he’d actually learned. He wanted the year-one story warts and all: how the install went, what surprised him on the first big job, what he’d change if he redid it, and what he’d tell the next collector calling us. This is that story, written the way we wish more owners would share theirs.

Month One: The Overhead vs Baseplate Decision

Our West Des Moines collector called us in February, well before the pour and framing were done on his shop addition. That timing is what saved him from the most common mistake we see with an automotive lift for home garage build: he still had time to change the ceiling detail. He originally wanted a baseplate two-post because he liked the clean look of no crossbar overhead, but his ceiling had three inches of finished drywall over a truss chord, meaning the anchor pattern for the baseplate hydraulic-hose crossover would have run right through a drywall seam. We would have made it work, but the visual would have been ugly.

Instead we walked him through the overhead configuration: hoses and cables ride in a fabricated crossbar at the top of the columns, and a shutoff bar disables the lift if the vehicle’s roof contacts it. For a collector who’s raising and lowering different vehicles constantly, that shutoff bar is the exact feature that prevents a very expensive drywall repair on the roof of a lowered sports car. He came around inside twenty minutes. The lesson: an overhead configuration on an automotive lift for home garage duty is often the safer choice for a multi-vehicle collector even when a baseplate would look cleaner.

Month Two: Install Day and What Went Slower Than Planned

Install day went almost exactly the way we quoted it. Two of our techs arrived at 8 a.m., laid out the anchor pattern, torqued anchors, stood the columns, ran the hydraulic hoses across the overhead bar, filled and bled the cylinder, then ran the drop test. What surprised our customer was how long the bleed and adjustment step took: nearly an hour and a half of raising to full lift, dropping to floor, rebleeding, and adjusting the equalization cable until both carriages travelled dead-even. He’d assumed the trucks would be gone by lunch. We were there until three.

The reason we take that long on every automotive lift for home garage install is that first-day equalization sets the wear pattern for the next decade. If you cheat that step, one carriage runs faster than the other from day one, meaning uneven load on the cables, uneven wear on the sheaves, and premature service. Fifteen minutes saved on install day costs a homeowner a cable set five years earlier than it should. Our West Des Moines customer told us later that watching that adjustment step is what convinced him he’d hired the right team, not the guys with the cheapest quote.

Month Three: First CV Axle Job and the Height Surprise

Nothing teaches an owner about their lift like the first real repair. Our customer decided to swap CV axles on a late-1990s coupe he’d been meaning to sort. On a two-post overhead automotive lift for home garage duty, a CV axle replacement is one of the friendliest jobs available: wheels dangle at full droop, both arms of the lift stay clear of the front subframe, and the vehicle’s weight is on the pinch welds, not on the suspension. He was in the vehicle underneath in fifteen minutes.

What surprised him was how much higher he needed to raise the vehicle than he’d guessed. To pull an axle from a mid-1990s or newer front-drive car, you need enough droop that the outer joint clears the strut knuckle by six or eight inches, plus room underneath to walk the axle to a bench. On this coupe that meant raising the vehicle to about sixty-two inches at the pinch weld, roughly shoulder height. If he’d bought a low-rise or scissor lift, the job would have been possible but crawling. That’s why we ask about brake, axle, and clutch work when we scope your project, even if the customer only says the word oil.

Month Six: Cable Stretch and Re-Tension

Every steel lift cable stretches during its first six months of use, which is why every quality automotive lift for home garage service includes a first-year adjustment visit on our install schedule. We drove out to our West Des Moines collector on month six, put a straightedge across both carriages at three heights, and confirmed we still had less than an eighth-inch offset. His equalization cable had stretched about a quarter-inch total, which we took up with two turns at the adjuster nut. Total visit time was under thirty minutes.

What we told him then, and what we tell every owner, is that if you can develop a habit of watching your lift raise every time you park a car, cable trouble will announce itself early. A cable that starts to fray sends a whisper of wire strands into the sheave housing, a cable that starts to drift means one carriage lagging behind. Neither costs much to fix if you catch them at whisper. Both cost a full rope set plus a day of labor if you catch them at scream. We stopped by again at month twelve and found no change from month six, meaning his install was going to give him at least a decade of quiet service.

Month Eight: Storing a Second Car Overhead

An overhead two-post doesn’t store a second car underneath the way a four-post does, so around month eight our customer added a four-post storage lift on the opposite side of the shop specifically for winter storage of his summer driver. Some buyers think they need to pick between wrenching and storage. In reality, a serious collector often ends up with one of each, and we build our layouts anticipating that possibility. In his case we located the four-post two feet farther from the wall than the two-post to leave clean walkaround on both sides.

Six months into having both lifts, he called to say the four-post had turned into his most-used piece of shop equipment because he stores three cars in the same footprint that used to hold two. That’s the multiplier effect a good layout unlocks. If you’re considering an automotive lift for home garage service and you own more than two vehicles, we recommend at least having a conversation about the two-lift path before you commit to just one. Even if you only buy one this year, we can lay out the shop so a second lift plugs in cleanly next year without moving the first.

Month Ten: The Overhead Safety Bar Earns Its Keep

Two winters into the collection, our West Des Moines customer accidentally forgot to fold the door mirrors on a taller-than-usual project sedan before he started raising the lift. The overhead safety bar on his automotive lift for home garage setup did exactly what it was engineered to do: it caught the leading edge of the sunroof frame and shut the lift down before the roof deformed. He called us laughing about it because the shutoff had probably saved the vehicle a body panel. That single incident paid for the overhead configuration in one moment.

We tell every customer buying a two-post to think of the overhead bar as insurance you pay for once. Baseplate two-posts don’t have that catch at all: if the vehicle’s roof hits ceiling or rafter, you find out by hearing metal fold. In a heated, drywalled shop with a low ceiling detail, we push customers toward overhead nine times out of ten for exactly this reason. In an open pole barn with fifteen feet of headroom over the lift, we’ll happily quote baseplate. The building drives the choice more than the brochure does, which is why we walk your shop before we quote.

Twelve-Month Lookback: What He’d Do Differently

At the twelve-month mark we asked our customer what he would change if he redid his automotive lift for home garage build. His answer was short: he’d have added a floor drain and a mop sink in the same pour as the lift anchors. Everything about the lift itself he’d repeat exactly. The overhead configuration, the two-post plus four-post combination, the equalization visit at month six, the anchor spec, the ceiling location, all right. The mop sink and drain were the shop-build items he underestimated. Waste fluid handling is what a collector actually does most days.
