Ceiling Height: Where the Comparison Starts
His shop was a detached garage with 10.5-foot ceilings at the drywall and a 9-foot garage door. That measurement drives everything. A full-rise two-post with a raised passenger vehicle needs about 12 feet of ceiling to fully extend without hitting an overhead cross-brace. At 10.5 feet, we can install a two-post, but the buyer has to accept that the lift’s practical top-of-travel is about six feet, not eight. That’s still fine for most work, but you won’t walk under a fully raised SUV standing straight.
A mid-rise scissor lift, by contrast, only rises 40 to 48 inches at the deck. Ceiling height is irrelevant. Door swing is irrelevant. The scissor lives entirely below chest height and gives you clear access to wheels, brakes, exhaust, and — with the right pan placement — engine oil pan gaskets. Door Swing and Column Placement
The other constraint at his lake shop was door swing. The service door on the back wall opened inward toward the bay floor, and he wasn’t willing to give it up. Twenty minutes to expose the pan, another 40 to clean the mating surface and reset it, and you’re done.
On a mid-rise scissor, the same job takes a little more setup. The vehicle is only 40 to 48 inches in the air, so you’re sitting on a shop stool rather than standing. You need a low-profile drain pan and you need to plan the pan-drop path around the scissor deck. Most techs adapt to this in one or two jobs. It’s slower by maybe 15 minutes per pan swap, and that adds up if you’re doing four a month, but for a home shop doing one or two a month it’s a non-issue. The trade you’re making is ceiling clearance for work-height comfort.
Weight Rating and What He Actually Lifts
He runs a mixed personal fleet: an F-150, a Subaru wagon, a project ’70s coupe, and his wife’s crossover. Everything under 6,500 pounds. A 9,000-pound two-post is more than enough. A 6,000-pound scissor is enough for everything except the F-150 loaded — for that one truck he’d want a 7,000 or 9,000 pound scissor. That single-vehicle question is often the tipping point on the whole configuration.

Where the two-post pulls ahead is resale. There’s a bigger used market for two-post lifts than scissors, so five years from now the two-post will hold more of its value if you decide to sell. Scissors have a narrower resale audience because they don’t fit every shop layout. If long-term value matters to your decision, that’s a real thumb on the scale toward the two-post.

He went with the scissor. The ceiling clearance and the door-swing constraint were both binding, and he wasn’t willing to give up the door.
