Most shops treat the power unit as an afterthought – bolt it wherever there’s an open patch of wall. For an RV and trailer shop doing alignment work on long-wheelbase units, that’s a mistake. First, check fluid level and color monthly, not annually – alignment bays cycle the lift up and down constantly, which stresses seals faster than occasional lifts. Second, listen for any new whirring or rattling sound; a pump that starts making noise it’s never made before is telling you something is wearing internally, often the coupling that turns the pump shaft, well before it fails outright.

Third, keep the reservoir vented properly and avoid letting water or condensation build up inside, especially in a shop with a drive-through door exposed to Iowa’s seasonal humidity swings. Moisture in hydraulic fluid accelerates wear on internal pump components and is one of the more common root causes we find when a used lift starts acting up. None of these habits require special tools – just a five-minute check built into someone’s weekly routine.

What They’d Change If They Started Over

Asked a year in what they’d do differently, the shop’s answer was simple: they’d have asked about pump duty cycle sooner and budgeted for the higher-rated motor from day one instead of upgrading after the check valve issue. They also said they underestimated how much floor space the hose routing would need once they added a second lift bay for overflow alignment work – something worth factoring in if you’re planning to scale.

Otherwise, the layout held up. The pump location kept it protected from road debris, service access stayed easy, and workflow through the bay never bottlenecked even during their busiest trailer season. That’s the real test of a good install – not how it looks on day one, but how it performs after a full year of real use.
