Techs raise a vehicle partway, drop a driveshaft, raise it again to check clearance, then lower it to torque something at working height. Family shops that have been open for 30, 40, 50 years tend to have a mix of vehicle types coming through — old trucks the grandfather used to work on, newer diesels the son added to the service list, and whatever the grandson is now bringing in with modern driveline electronics. Plan reservoir and pump placement before you pour, not after. A pump unit needs clear access on at least two sides for fluid checks, filter changes, and troubleshooting — and if it’s wedged against a wall or under a workbench, every service call takes twice as long.

For a family shop planning decades of use, we suggest mounting the pump assembly on a small elevated platform rather than directly on the slab, which keeps it away from water, road salt tracked in during Missouri winters, and shop debris. It also makes it easier for the next generation running the shop to spot a leak early, before it turns into the kind of failure that leaves a vehicle stuck mid-air on a Friday afternoon.

Planning for the Next 20 Years of Ownership
